Is the CFA scored using a composite score and does doing poorly on one section necessarily mean failure on the overall assessment?

Male
Height: 5' 10"
Weight: 157 pounds

Basketball throw: 47ft (Concern)
Pull ups: 12
Shuttle Run: 6 seconds
Crunches: 95
Push ups: 71
Mile run: 6:27

Not sure if bball throw is passing or not but if it is - it is probably the least weighted of all the events

I have never heard anyone be able to explain why it is still part of the exam except tradition

A failure of one item means you failed the CFA. There are minimums for each section, but USNA doesn't publish what those are. I believe the basketball throw is intended to demonstrate upper body strength and overall flexibility/agility.

A long retired BGO once told me that it had to testing range of motion more than strengh..Don't know if thats true or not.
Do other SA's do basketball throw ?

Yes - USMA and USAFA at least still do the basketball throw as part of the CFA - not certain about USMMA or USCGA

My son was under average on 2 of the CFA categories- mile run and sit ups- maxed on one, and has to redo CFA- if that helps at all.

Did your son get ask by admissions to redo his cfa?. If so, how long after he submitted his scores was he asked to redo it?. Can I ask what his mile time and sit up count was?. (My DS is taking tomorrow and those are his two weaker events also)

Thanks

USCGA does not do the same CFA, I think it even goes by a different name. It consists of cadence push ups (where the test proctor tells you when to go up and down), sit-ups, and a 1.5 mile run. Not certain about USMMA.

For basketball throw, do stretches and practice. There are some good video's out there that cover the best technique for the B-ball throw.

How long was it before you were notified that it had to be re-taken?

Did someone at USNA Admissions tell him he was "under average" , or simply tell him that CFA was rejected ? I've never heard USNA quantifying the CFA with candidates. Pehaps it was a R , with explanation that mile run and sit ups needed to be improved to pass. Did they tell him what he needed to achieve ?

It was a notification letter in his USAFA app portal- 2 days after initial submission. Has 30 days to submit 2nd attempt.

No details as to what counted or didn't...it all has to be redone. Letter said "although no minimum set" then goes on to explain he needs a resubmission.

Did USAFA ever list his scores as received? Or did you just receive failure notification? My DS had his scores submitted over 24 hours ago and his CFA scores are still listed as not received.

Yes - noted in app portal received 24 hrs after submission, resubmit notification letter day after that. We were in limbo and confused as to why the checkmark but then the resubmit ltr- but think it was just a check mark for "yes it's been submitted and is being processed."

When we submitted ours, it put the check mark within the hour, and said it was submitted and processed already.

USMMA Does the same CFA as USNA/USMA/USAFA. Only USCGA and the ROTC programs are different.
