CFA worries

I just took my CFA for the first time, and I am happy with it for the most part, all of my events are either above average, average, or close to average, all except BB throw; I am a male and my score is well below average, but I am the starting pitcher on a state contender D1 high school baseball team. I am worried that it will not pass and want input on whether to retake it. I’ve seen “the CFA calculator” online, but I figured I’d ask here first before spending the $10 for it. My scores are 44ft BB throw, 8.8 shuttle run, 58 push-ups, 12 pull ups, 91 sit-ups, and 7:19 mile. Thoughts? Anything helps.

The others are solid, but the BB throw is not passing. You must take it again.

I already paid the $10 so I input your numbers on the Gain Service Academy CFA calculator. Total score: 572 Percentile: 60%
I honestly don't know how accurate this site is, but since you were curious...I hope it is helpful.

For anything not presented, owned or endorsed by an SA, I say “caveat emptor!” The only ones with precise information on how inputs are assessed are those working in Admissions right now.

I am only a parent of a yuk at West Point. Remember that the CFA is only 10% of tha application. That said, the basketball throw is a little low and can be improved with practice and improved technique. Since you are a pitcher, are you throwing the basketball overhand like a baseball? Have you tried the “slingshot” or “catapult“ technique? There should be YouTube videos about technique to improve your throws with practice. Good luck!

One of the best things that helped me with my B-Ball throw was utilizing a full range of motion. My score was 53ft (female). I have relatively short arms, so I learned to twist my body where I would take the ball, nestled it between my wrist and forearm and extend my arm from the back of my left hip, twist, and utilize a driving force to throw the ball.

It is a little difficult to explain through words, but Strew Smith's "Candidate Fitness Assessment B-Ball Throw" was the greatest aid for me.

The B-Ball throw is all about TECHNIQUE and PRACTICE. Once you get the proper technique down, you can throw anywhere from 10-20 feet further. Once I practiced technique, I went from 38ft to 53ft. However, you cannot forget to put in the time to practice this event. It sneaks up on you.

Good luck!!

I was under the impression that it had to be overhand, like a baseball throw. It was eating me up last night, so I binged technique videos for ~2 hours and I see what you mean by the catapult technique and such. I could not see myself throwing it to the average of 69ft overhand, so finding out that I am allowed to use that different technique put me at ease. I will retake again and use a new throwing motion; the catapult seems like it'd be easiest for me, thank you.

I hope you found Stew Smith’s website and videos of CFA elements and training tips. Stew is a former Navy SEAL, USNA grad and USNA staff officer, now a fitness professional.

It’s the technique.

There was also a recent thread where someone posted they used smaller balls and focused on technique first, got that learned, then moved up to larger balls and then the basketball. That made sense to me too.

I watched a couple more videos and have been throwing a basketball for a little bit now and I’m around 67 feet consistently. As soon as I changed my form the throw felt so much easier. Thanks for the help, will be retaking next Wednesday.

I just retook my CFA today (in the 35 degree slushy snow weather!); would you mind plugging these new scores in for me?
New CFA scores:
BB throw: 78ft (34ft farther)
Pull-ups: 12 (same as last week)
Shuttle run: 8.42 (0.50 seconds faster)
Sit-ups: 95 (4 more/max score)
Push-ups: 54 (same as last week)
Mile run: 7:09 (10 seconds faster)

Brrrr!! 35 and slushy doesn't sound fun...LOL

WOW...your basketball throw 😱🥳 I went to 8.4 on the shuttle because it only goes to the 10th place on the shuttle run.

Great job!!!
