I am taking my CFA in a few days as my deadline for the AFA is approaching and I can't push it farther as I still want to apply there. I sustained an injury a few months ago which I have now been cleared from, but it prevented me from doing any explosive movements for a while, making me struggle with the shuttle run. My basketball throw is also subpar. (Male)

BBall throw: 64 ft
Pullups:13
Shuttle Run: 9.7s
Situps: 93
Pushups: 70
Mile Run: 5:30

I know there aren't posted minimums, but would my basketball throw and shuttle run result in me failing the CFA?

Nope, I got lower scores and I qualified!

Those seem like great scores to me

Good job healing up and working through an injury. You worked the problem, now you have to submit and let the chips fall where they may.
Honestly that mile time is impressive.

Looks great.
Do you wear cleats for the shuttle run ? If not give it a try.

From the CFA instructions for all the SAs who use the CFA as a standardized measure to assess physical fitness.
Any item that gives a candidate an unfair advantage is not permitted during the CFA.”

That’s understood and should go without saying. I don’t think wearing cleats on a football field or track/ jogging sneakers for the run falls into the category of unfair advantage. That said clear it with your coach first to be sure.

Are those individual bests, or did you actually simulate the CFA with the required maximum breaks?

If that was a true practice test, you have zero issues to worry about if you put up those same numbers.

If not, expect lower results when you actually do everything back to back to back.

USMA instructions specifically say “I.e. cleats” when saying what you cannot use during the CFA. I would assume instructions for all academies are similar. And, yes, some may wear cleats during CFA and get away with it but not the best way to begin a career living by an honor code if someone gets in by breaking the rules. It is the responsibility of both the CFA administrator and the candidate to make sure the CFA is conducted properly and without an unfair advantage.

There’s the spirit of the law and there’s the letter of the law. In this case, both apply. Let your conscience be your guide.

If gaining a half second from wearing cleats in a shuttle run is someone's make or break for the CFA, they probably have bigger problems when it comes to physical stuff they should work on ......

When I read that I was like "Jeez, these scores are actually kinda great" minus the bball which I've heard doesn't matter that much

Thank you all for the advice and words of encouragement, took my CFA yesterday and was pleased with the results. I did much better than I planned overall, especially in the shuttle run, I think it's because I ran on a gym floor instead of the turf where I usually run and slip a little. Did worse on the mile than I usually do but I'm now qualified for the CFA in the system.

BBall throw: 64 ft
Pullups: 15
Shuttle Run: 8.6s
Situps: 95
Pushups: 71
Mile: 5:49

you'll be qualified for the fitness portion.

hello. I am a female and these are my scores, but should I try and retake the CFA??

42 foot basketball throw
8.6 sec flex hang (I injured my back so I can't do this properly)
9.5 second shuttle run
93 sit-ups
45 push-ups
7:33 mile.

These are USAFA CFA averages, but I would bet they are exactly the same as USNA's.
EXERCISEMEN AVGWOMEN AVG
Basketball Throw69'42'
Pull-ups122
Flexed Arm Hang (women)–N/A31 sec
Shuttle Run8.1 sec9.4 sec
Modified Sit-ups (crunches)8178
Push-ups6241
One-mile Run6:297:30

The USMA "calculator" comes back "at risk" with the above scores... hang 18 sec. (vs. 8.6), and it moves to "pass", with everything else the same....
* remember this is just an estimate of how it would score...not a fact.
You got this!
