CG Commandant should be full member of Joint Chiefs

Here is a link for one of the “Space Force” scenes.
We laugh at it, and we make fun of the Coast Guard as we do a sibling. But heaven help anyone outside the services who makes fun of the Coast Guard in front of me. As a long time boater, someone who grew up and worked on the water, I always admired the courage it took to go out on the water in weather when I wouldn’t leave my house.
Why haven’t I seen these? ROFLMAO.

“Space Force” must have had some pretty good military advisors. Much of it, to include ribbons, the pilot’s “I love me wall”, the military humor, are spot on. The scene in the first episode when Steve Carell tells his wife their house will be a “little west of Dulles...” Worth watching for the military inside humor.
Almost forgot. The dependent humor. The DD in the series finding out they are moving from the DC area to the middle of the country. I remember our DD being pulled from a high school in NY to KY and telling us, “You made me leave NY... for this????”

It may be beneficial for the USCG to have a seat at the Joint Chiefs, both budgetary and operationally. Will it happen......who knows. A problem may surface because the USCG is 14 USC and the DOD is 10 USC, the CG answers to the Secretary of DHS and the other branches answer to the Secretary of Defense. So does the the DHS Secretary get involved in the Joint Chiefs as the CG's boss? And if not, then you have the Posse Comitatus problem if the joint Chiefs direct a mission regarding Law Enforcement and the Commandant disagrees, who solves the disagreement DHS or DOD?

Personally, I would like to see the CG as part of the Joint Chiefs, better coordination, planning, and access to assets.

Actually it (being in or out of the JCS) has absolutely nothing to do with the budgets. Not even a little.

The JCS are not in the budget business - the budgeting gets done by the services up through their service to DoD or DHS and onto the appropriate Congressional Committees. Operationally, the Joint Chiefs are not in the chain either as the Operational Chain is through the Theater or Operational Commanders and not the Service Chiefs.

Again, the Joint Chiefs don't direct missions. Look to the various Theater and Unified Commanders for that and the Service Commanders are not in that chain either.

In my estimation, the issue of whether or not to put the Commandant of the USCG onto the JCS is a feel good issue with little relevance or imact either way as was the case with the inclusion of the National Guard last year. No operational or budgetary gaps were filled, it just made some constituencies, in that case the National Guard feel good. If the commentary here is any indication, adding the Coast Guard to the JCS will make some Coasties happy so at least we'll have that going for us but the actual impact will be negligible.

The more "Coast Guard Florida" I binge on youtube instead of studying, the more I want to fly for the USCG.

Posse Comitatus isn't an issue. The Joint Chiefs wouldn't direct a mission, but also, the Coast Guard Commandant being a part of something doesn't then confer that statutory authority to other agencies or organizations. A joint task force in Florida with local and state LE doesn't mean the state agencies can now enforce federal maritime law in Alaska.

If the National Guard Bureau has a seat, I think they can figure it out.

I don't see much changing in the way of budget or operations either. I do see more harmonization in joint ops. But I also don't think we'd want a Coast Guard in the U.S. with DOD priorities shaping the budget. I'd imagine the choice between buying another F-35 v. tending buoys in Boston.... buoy tenders aren't going to look for the best of prioritization.

I never posted this last night. I hit post this morning when I realized it was still sitting as a draft. Oldretswo made the same points.

I like to remind all the haters of what the Coast Guard does best. Prayers for the families of the missing, and for all those risking their lives searching.

I know of NO ONE who hates the Coast Guard. Military services may make fun of each other, but heaven help any outsider who joins in.
I make fun of the Air Force pilots. But I thank God we have A-10 pilots willing to drop brass on the heads of people like my DD and DS; that they secure the skies with well trained fighter pilots; that they have B-52s loitering on station to drop ordinance. I have friends who owe their lives to the Air Force close air support.
The Marines eat crayons and can’t communicate in multisyllabic words, but I saw their flag draped coffins being loaded aboard Air Force transports for the long journey home. Heaven help an outsider who makes fun of the Marines.
The Navy... well... I’m sure there is something good about them. Hmmm.... think... 😜
We may tease the Coast Guard as being part of the DOT (joke, I know they aren’t anymore... I think), but I’ve seen some of their helicopter pilots fly in weather that would make me pee in my pants. Going out on the Great Lakes when a November Witch is blowing? Ummm... no thanks. I’ll take another combat mission into Najaf.

I have a small Marine Construction company, and own couple small spud barges. Your description of a spud barge is correct, but that's not a spud barge, its a lift boat. My spud barges will still move in heavy weather even with the spuds down, and I would never dream of taking one out of a harbor/canal/intracoastal....I believe those lift boats raise the boat above the waves and go out in deep water.

What you say makes sense, given the flat plate on the bottom of the spud thing.
