So I figure I'd take a break from sweating EA results, and try to find out a little more about the band at the academy. I'm an avid musician and haven't been able to find much information about music at New London, and figured maybe a few of you guys could help me out. What are the opportunities for music at the academy? Is there a concert or marching band? Also, can 4Cs join the band? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

The instrumental music program at the USCGA is very active and thriving. Yes, 4th class can participate. In fact, they will encourage you to bring your instrument to R-Day (they will send you the sheet music during the summer to learn).

Instrumental Music groups include:

Regimental Marching Band
NiteCaps Jazz Band
Pep Band
Concert Band
Pipe & Drum Band
Polished Brass Quintet
Saxations Sax Quartet
Windjammers Drum & Bugle Corps

USCGA Activities & Clubs - Music

If you indicate interest in one or more of the band programs on your application the cadet band director (CWO Edwards) will contact you. I'm in Jazz Band and Windjammers and I would say both are really cool oppurtunities.

Any Room for String Instruments?

Do any of the performing groups have a place for a violin player?

Hmmmm.... I don't think so, though a classmate of mine places violin in one of the church bands. I'm not too sure though, I'll shoot him an email for you and see if he knows.

Do you have to try out for one of the bands? Also, if you bring your instrument to R-Day, are you expected to carry it around the whole day? I mean, I play the clarinet so its not a big deal for me but what about someone who plays the baritone horn or the trombone?

No, you can drop it off on Sunday during the "pre-R-Day" social/picnic/meet/greet.

If you don't go to the Sunday reception, you can bring it to R-Day and someone in the music department will store it for you.

I don't think you have to try out for any bands, just for Glee Club and its associated groups, and like Luigi said you can bring it to R-day and when you check in that morning you can drop it off in a big pile of instruments.

Sorry for the double post but here's what he has to say:

"Heythere! ..well depending on interest levels etc. there have been various cadet (string) chamber groups in the past and I know that those interested are encouraged to participate in the orchestra etc. at Conn. (and my cousin who graduated on 06 actually played for one of the new London symphony things while here). Other than that, I know the chapel (catholic &protestant) music ministries love good musicians, and there are doubtless several ‘bands’ that may be interested a good violinist who is ready to commit some time. I’ve already recorded a little w/several friends here, and play for the WedPM vespers, OCF/FNF, NLCM SunAM & SNA groups whenever I can."
