So far I think its a great program.. BUT I am not sure how I feel about the "emancipation" and enlistment... if things didnt work out after a year.. then that what??? she would be 18, emanicpated , enlisted in the CG.. ....??.... and if she wou;d decide to go a different route.. would I be able to add her back to my insurance as a dependant in college??? although I know I wouldnt be able to get her a DOD dep id card again, if she has one that has her in the CG reserves?? an ideas?

The Point Of Contact for all CGA Scholars Program information is:

LT Meghan Brunaugh, (860)701-6322
meghan.a.brunaugh@uscga.edu

yes I read that.. I was just curious if there was someone here that might have had a child go thru the program that would know the answer.. :)

I am sure the admissions folks at the Academy are slammed right now.

My D is at Marion Military Institute on the CGA Scholars program right now. We didn't take her off of our insurance - I believe it is recommended to keep your son or daughter on your insurance the entire time they are at USCGA also (just in case the unthinkable happens and they leave for some reason, I think it may be hard to get them back on the insurance policy). Our D was 17 when she took her oath up at New London in July/August - I guess that is the emancipation thing -- we had to sign a paper.

Some other things about the CGA Scholars program that we didn't know until it was offered - since the cadets are enlisted, they draw a pay. This is the only service academy that enlists their scholars - they get paid to go to school! Our D will finish her year at MMI, after paying room & board from her pay, with about $10,000. Not a bad deal! Another thing with the Coast Guard- by having their orientation before sending the cadets off to prep school, the cadets know each other before starting - a great bonding experience - and they look out for each other at the prep school. There is also no question about what is expected of them. I believe they are the only service academy to do the orientation. The USCGA really has the whole prep school process figured out well!

I know I have posted this several times on other threads, but we feel blessed that our D got this opportunity. She is doing great there and has matured so much! This extra year is only going to help assure her of success at USCGA next year.

That said, LT Meghan Brunaugh is a great resource to answer your questions. When my D was deciding on the offer, she would e-mail LT Brunaugh and she answered her questions quickly.

Thanks! that is the info I wa looking for. the ability to keep her on our one insuarnace is good, and I fuess that she will have a green military ID card, she will no longer need her current brown depn one. Thanks... That made me feel much better.. :)

Moms.... (shaking my head) LOL

Did everyone who got a deferral letter also get the CGA

brochure and letter?

Is it true that the priority for CGA is (1) athletes (2) diversity ?

It sounds like an outstanding opportunity for anyone and a leg-up for the students who attend.

I studied engineering in college and graduated (B.S. Petroleum Engineering) in just four years. It was HARD! I still have nightmares about missing a Physics test or losing an assignment or not being able to find the core lab. I think having an extra year up front to boost up both mentally and physically would have been a real benefit to me.

I know that for some people, it might seem like tacking on an extra year to college isn't a good idea... but, I think a lot of civilian college kids are taking 5years these days, especially to get a technical degree.

For any of you who are offered this scholarship, I say "Go For It!"

I don't think you would regret it.

i dont think so b/c I only got a deferral letter. Have you heard anything yet?

So is your son excited about CGA Scholars my daughter is???

I dont know about the athletic and diversity being a priority... I hadnt heard that, but I hadnt hear anything else either. I can see how the Coast Guard could be more diverse then the other 4 academies, because they get to choose themselves...

Well I wasnt sure... so I went and looked... I couldnt find profiles on the USMMA or the USAFA.. but here is what I found....

I just found this on the CGA site....
963 Cadets enrolled
43 states and 9 foreign nations represented
100% of students housed on campus
23 varsity athletic teams (20 division III, 3 division I)
27% of Cadets are women
15% of Cadets are minorities

Found on the USNA site.... Class of 2012 stats:
Admitted............................................... 1,261

The Class of 2012 includes 21% (261) women.

The Class of 2012 includes 28.1 % (351) minority midshipmen with ethnic backgrounds as follows: African American (83), Hispanic (131), Asian American (68), Native American (32) and Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (37).
--------------------------------------------------------
USMA: Class of 2011 profile (2012 didnt list diveristy)

Approximately 1,310 cadet candidates.
There are 225 women, 17%

319 Minority Candidates: (approx 24.5%) 81 African-Americans, 104 Asian-
Americans, 124 Hispanic-Americans and ten Native Americans.

CGA? The Academy?

Or CGA Scholars (Prep)?

By law (14 USC 182) the USCGA cannot consider race/gender as a factor in admisisons, the entire USCGA admissions process is race/gender blind.

no the information I postd was from the profiles... She mentioned diversity... so I looked at the profiles all the SA...

I like the law you quoted. but I always wonder when things don't matter why is it always one of the the first question on an application? Since they cant use the information, why ask it?

Even though we're the only federal service academy, and only one of a handful of civilian colleges, that cannot (by law) consider gender or race when making admissions decisions, we are still required (as a federally funded institution) to report gender and race statistics about our incoming class and student body to Congress and several federal agencies. That's primarily why we ask the questions even though we cannot use the information for admissions purposes.

..... I think that is a great policy .....

Hey guys,

those who received the scholarship offers, what type of SAT scores and gpa's did your son's and daughters have? And, any sports? If you don't mind sharing. If you'd rather email me personally, let me know. Just want to see if we are in the range. thanks. Also, evidently I haven't researched properly, but is there a site you can send me to that explains the details of the CGA scholarship program and expectations on line somewhere? thanks again

My D didnt received an offer just a brochure on the program in a seperate envelope.

Hmmm....am I reading it correctly, then if you've already applied to the academy, one does not have to apply for the scholarship, they are already being considered? Or, does one have to apply separately in addition from their app to the CGA?

All applicants not tendered an appointment to the Class of 2013 will be considered for the CGA Scholars Program...no additional application is required.

Thanks for the reply. Then, relative to those who have been deferred to regular admission that have not received offers for scholarship, could that mean those deferred to RA are still being considered for full appointments as their chances would be a little higher than those who received scholarship offers, and if they (those deferred) do not receive full appointments in March, they could still be offered a scholarship in March? Do you have any idea how may appointments will be offered in March? How many were offered early admission? Thanks Objee.

Not to Answer for Objee..... BUT I think anything is still possible..

Letters

When your sons/daughters got the prep school offer did they get a small letter denying acceptance before the letter for prep school?

Or did they just get the prep school offer?

Thanks
