My DS just got a conditional appointment for CGAS. My question is how do they decide which one he will go to?He is a recruited baseball player.

Decisions about where a Cadet Candidate will go are a mystery to those of us outside. With DS's class, we parents tried to retroactively figure out where our offspring went by what we knew of their strengths and weaknesses. We had our guesses. It was a fun game, but not very useful. That class is now LTJGs, so at the time NAPS was not included. Not sure how that figures in.

You do know that conditional generally means they haven't gotten through MEPS?

I would bet MMI. DS attended last year and there is a baseball program at the school.

Actually, none of the recruited baseball players from CGAS went to MMI this year, so I would bet GMC or maybe NAPS.

But honestly you never know.

Also proud parent of a DS with a conditional appt to CGAS program. Was following the thread on guessing where. Anyone want to take a stab at a lacrosse player?

@Kendall is it frowned upon asking the contact at the bottom of the email stating you got the conditional appt on which CGAS location you have or do you wait to be told. Don’t want to seem ungrateful but I suspect it’s the coach of the sport that your child plays assigning the cgas candidate?
Do you find this information out before you accept the appt? I have heard lax is also typically at LAX. If it’s NAPS, are they fully integrated with the Naval Academy Prep students or are the CGA scholars expected to stick together?

You don’t find out which school before the deadline for acceptance.

@Survivor I agree with @Alaskan above. I asked DD and was advised the same, USCGAS assigns. That said, you don't come across as ungrateful and I do understand your point in that regards. My GUESS is USCGAS has an idea where a recruited LAX player is going and you may be able to humbly inquire. Have you visited the USCGA LAX page on FB? I wonder if you could message there or research recent players' paths to USCGA? A great page to visit regardless; in the upper right hand corner it allows you to chat or send a message. Good luck and congratulations!

There has been a trend recently of recruited athletes going to prep schools with CGAS and not participating in athletics during the prep year......for various reasons. DS was in the CGAS program last year and he knew a few cadets who were recruited athletes and not participating in team sports during the prep year.

Congrats @CGAS proud mom to you and your DS! Its a roller coaster ride but so thankful my son was given this opportunity. Please pm me if you have any questions.
My DS was a recruited athlete last year and is now with CGAS as Cadet Candidate at NAPS. You will accept your admissions before you find out which prep school. We researched all prep schools and my son was prepared to go anywhere they sent him even if that meant he wasn’t playing his sport. We did not find out until late May where he was going (and officially in writing in June.) The wait was a little nerve racking but it trains you for your future as a military parent. His coach had a preference he mentioned to us but we were told it’s up to admissions. My son is playing his sport this year at NAPS.

As far as NAPs and the CGAS kids and Naval Academy kids. They full integrate together as they are all “Napsters.” When the CGAS kids arrive for INDOC, they are tight because they have already had a week of CG orientation together and therefore have formed a special bond. Three weeks of INDOC teaches them to have each other’s backs so they all bond as a squad, company, and platoon pretty quickly. It’s a small group so they all know each other. They spend the most amount of time with their company and sports teams. They change roommates each trimester. It’s been a wonderful experience and my son has already mentioned how he will miss some of his buddies that will head off to the NA.

Just an update. I don't believe CGAS schools are assigned until all CGAS candidates have been appointed from both EA and RA. It is fun to speculate, but please don't bother Admissions about it. They are busy enough as it is. And it is true that some recruited athletes won't be doing their sport during CGAS.

Have you talked to the CGA coach about this yet? You can get a pretty clear understanding of his expectations and experience even if no decisions have been reached yet.

Lacrosse is likely going to NAPS. Your DS will be in great hands when he gets to CGA as Coach runs a really good program.
