CGAS appointment

Sorry. There were 46 on the weight list in EA. 52 appointments where offered in EA. They usually have a class of 60. All of that is from EA. So if you were wait listed in RA there is very little hope. It is the closes thing to a rejection as the effect is the same.

I had a question about that. I know that the direct appointment people can request to have one of the officers come out to present the certificate at their high school, but do the CGAS kids have that opportunity too? Is it something we need to request?

There is a procedure for requesting if you would like this, and don't have someone particular in mind. If you haven't received a link from Admissions, be a little patient. It can be an Admissions Officer, and Active Duty officer, an Admissions Partner, and Auxiliarist or just someone who has helped you (or your offspring). You don't have to go through Admissions if there is someone you want to have present. My son couldn't get anyone from the Coast Guard, so the Navy stepped in. (There is a back story there, so things actually worked nicely.) There is a cadet at CGA now who had his appointment presented by his father and grandfather who were both CGA grads with CG careers. So if you don't have someone special, go through Admissions. If that fails, PM me as I have contacts in the throughout the Auxiliary. Any one of them would be glad to help.

Thank you for the information. So, it is ok to request for CGAS too, even though she doesn't have an official appointment yet? No one at her school knows what the USCGA is. If anything, they think it's just a "lifeguard" school. They only know the big three SA's. It'll be nice to have CG officer come out and speak of the USCG missions and the prestige of the USCGA. It'll be great publicity for the USCGA!

I didn't realize we can just ask anyone. I totally thought that the admissions contacts the high schools and make arrangements for presenting, but that's not the case then? We do know an active duty officer in our area who has been acting as a mentor. Can we just personally ask him then? He wouldn't be caught off guard? Does he choose his own words for the presentation, or does the academy provide him with a guideline on what should be said? We want to make sure we're not troubling this officer too much. Also, do we make the arrangements with her high school ourselves then? just contact the high school principal and say, "hey, we have an officer coming to present our daughter. Can you make time for her during the awards ceremony?" That seems a little tacky, but is that how it really is? I suppose the whole thing isn't even necessary, but our DD is the most humble person you'll meet; she never tells anyone any of her accomplishments or explains how prestigious the USCGA is. We want the USCGA to be recognized for what it is and for her to truly start feeling proud of her accomplishments in getting into such an incredible school and an amazing military branch (and not a "lifeguard school").

If she has been working with an AD officer, and he/she is willing to present, that is the best of all possible worlds. Admissions does have a script which can be modified to fit the occasion. If your contact doesn't have it, I can pass it along. PM me your email address in that case. As far as the school, your DD's guidance counselor should be aware of her appointment. That should be your point of contact with respect to an awards ceremony. Our school had a separate night for that. But at graduation both DS and his buddy were recognized for going to Service Academies.

No problem. See will accept her Scholarship to the School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. I do not know why issue wait list for Prep School if no one comes off it!

I'm a testament to what one of the other users said regarding this. I was initially waitlisted for the CGAS program, but ended up getting an appointment in late June, only about three or four weeks before the reporting in day. Many of my peers were waitlisted as well. Like the other user mentioned, people do get off of the waitlist reasonably frequently, and the waitlist should in no way be interpreted as a form of rejection.

That was a great story. However if all have to accept by May 1st, why did it take until late June to get in? Did you get an appointment after CGAS?

Another question. Where you wait listed foe CGAS during EA or RA?

Although everyone replies by May 1, some kids get pulled out last minute for unforeseen reasons. I've seen some who got medical DQ for things they didn't disclose during DoDMERB, new injury, etc. I've also heard someone pulled out for the answers they provided on their online questionnaire raising red flag, and things some posted on social media suggesting illegal substance use, etc. Someone waitlisted at their dream school may hear back on May 10 and may suddenly decide they don't want to go to CGAS anymore although they already replied Yes to CGAS earlier. Who knows... it's not exactly ethical, but I don't think anyone can hold them back either. I've seen kids walk straight out of swearing in ceremony due to cold feet, even during R-day too, so it could happen any time between May 1 and SI day. These are limited, but it happens every year.

Just because someone decides by the deadline whether it be for prep or a direct they can change their mind up until SDAY. Some turn notify the academy after they have accepted because a late injury, got accepted to another Academy, cold feet, etc. Then a spot opens up. I know for a fact one last year was notified somewhere around late June early July. The kid this happened to snapped it up and he wasn't from an area anywhere near the academy. I can't think of a better example of Semper Paratus.

I would suggest you have the kiddo let admissions know she would be willing to take a last minute spot. I would buy all the necessary from the report lists. You can return all of it if it doesn't work out.

BTW going into CGAS doesn't make things easier on you as parents. Golden ticket or not, coming into the 2nd semester and your kid tells you they are putting in an application to State U for a back up plan incase 2nd semesters goes to awry. Then you hear about the straight A superstar who is failing out their 4c year and say omg that could be my kid!

I loved watching the awards ceremony for the scholarship recipients. It was a LONG night! All of the Ivy League kids left us in awe same with the Fullriders for other accomplishments.

Nothing could compare to the 6 (all NJROTC) who received their awards. Most think USMA, USAF and USNA and then the full 2,3 and 4 year ROTC , NROTC, AFROTC....but when that soon to be coastie got her award the jaws dropped. It started out like a small award for CGAS but the CGA representative saved the best for last and explained what it actually meant. Bring a video camera!

Another question. Where you wait listed foe CGAS during EA or RA?

Regarding your first question, I think it was because somebody pulled themselves out of their CGAS spot very late in the process. When that happened, it opened up a slot, and I was chosen for it.

I applied RA, and was told I was waitlisted for CGAS on April 1st. An officer in charge of CGAS asked me sometime in May if I was still interested in being on the waitlist, and I said that I was.

Fast forward to late June. I got a call on a Friday saying that I was being offered an appointment, and I had until the following Monday (3 days) to accept or decline.

Thank you.

Just got an email from my AO saying that all appointment packages will be sent out next week.
Thank you for the heads up! Did they say whether we find out the prep school assignments at that time too or not? I'm sure all of us are pretty anxious to find out now.

I wasnt told anything about that, sorry. However, if i were to guess, I'd say the assignments would come with the package.

The CGAS page on the USCGA admissions website has been updated with the new handbook and forms to be completed and returned by May 1st. Looking forward to finding out where DS is headed. Maybe this week?!
