CGAS Prep School

I got appointed to NAPS to play football, and was told that the prep year counts towards my years of service and was wondering if that's true?
Yes, the time at prep school counts as time in service toward retirement. It does NOT count toward the 5 year service time that you must serve after graduating from USCGA.

Hello, First time posting, so be patient with me. I have been reading through several pages of different forums and I have a question. If my son does not receive an appointment to CGA, but is offered NAPS, when do they report? I read something about students attend both CGA and NAPS bootcamps? Please clarify as we are hoping to hear soon and based on the athletic coach asking him to write a letter saying he would accept a position at NAPS, we are thinking it might be NAPS. Thank you in advance for your response.

Re tears: Smile with pride (a lot), and keep repeating “See you soon.” This was my formula every time I stood on the pier and waved DH off on deployment or at-sea periods or I was the one leaving. Never “goodbye.” I perfected the art during one period of 4 back-to-back sea duty tours punctuated by a 4-month school ashore not where I was stationed.
Soooo true! There were LOTS of tears, but honestly most I saw were pride! We have it’sa big hug, and told him we couldn’t wait to hear what they were doing! I gave him a notebook, and really enraged him to write about his time. If nothing else it’s funny to reminisce with!

I think THE hardest part for me as a parent is the swift umbilical cord cut. They are an ADULT in every sense of the word. My son had a unique medical ‘situation’ during Swab summer, and let me tell you what a wake up call THAT was! He’s excited now as they enter their last stretch of school!

They will report to CGA for 3 weeks with the other CGAS's, then they will go to NAPS for their indoctrination, which I believe is also 3 weeks.

Welcome, not sure which sport you are referring to but my DS was basketball recruit who went to NAPS last year and is 4th class at CGA this year. I can testify to how great the CGAS program is and the numerous advantages the prepsters had this year when reporting. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out. Best of luck.

CGAS report date at USCGA is July 10, 2023. If they get NAPS as their assigned prep school they will be transported there for check in at NAPS on July 24. Otherwise, CGAS graduation at USCGA is (I believe) July 26 and then cadet candidates assigned to MMI, GMC and UMass Boston will be transported to their respective schools and YES we can intercept our cadet candidate at their prep school for check in.
