CGAS!!

No talk of envelopes over the last couple of days. Must mean that lots of news is on the way this week! What mail service is used for the big white envelopes?

Priority Mail. Good luck this week! :thumb:

JCollins,

I cannot begin to tell you how happy I am for you and daughter! Sounds like you had a wonderful trip. Blessings to all.

J Collins,
So, has your daughter made her decision yet??? (Inquiring minds want to know!). FYI - The program works - we found out (very) recently that our D has her appointment to the Coast Guard Academy!

Thanks - we are very excited for her (& she is very excited too), but we are keeping it low key until her big white envelope appears in the mail. She is doing so well at Marion - we figured she would get it, but, as you know, the wait can be unbearable at times... Anyway, it was good to find out (for her & us). Now, I'm just praying her roommate at Marion and all her other CGAS shipmates get their appointments too.

I just received her Acceptance letter for CGAS.. I will be sending it tomorrow. :thumb:

She loved the USMMA, but it just wasnt what she was looking for.

Her admissions officer at USMMA is AMAZING.

CGA SCHOLARS REPORT 7/27 to CGA

..... We await paperwork on which prep she will attend. I'm getting an extra month with her, but as each day goes by reality is starting to sink in... what an awesome future she (they) will have... and I'm gonna miss her sooo much..

So is it customary that parents go to the prep for report in also?

Julie

It probably depends on which prep school she goes to. Last year, NMMI cadets went directly to NMMI after orientation. MMI cadets went home for about a week before reporting. Since my D went to MMI, I flew down with her and went to the school with her. It was nice because I met some of the other parents of sponsored cadets for West Point and Air Force Academy. But, there were several cadets without their parents on that registration day and they were doing fine. I just "adopted" some of those kids when they were given a few hours of leave in the evening, & took them with me. An advantage for the CGA Scholars - since they have the 9 day orientation, they aren't strangers when they get to prep school.

Depending on where you live, R-Day for the scholars up at New London is nice to go to. You get to see them take their oaths and the academy has a parents Q&A session. I know my husband video taped the oath ceremony and we made copies for a bunch of other parents who couldn't come.

Another chance to go to the Prep School arrives on Parent's Weekend (I believe NMMI has this also). There were alot of things to see and do that weekend and the cadets were able to spend the night with you on Saturday (we went shopping in Birmingham!). If you can only go once, Parent's Weekend is the one to go to -- the cadets get to show off all the things they have been learning and you can meet their professors and hear how they are doing in classes. There was an Open House at the President's House and plenty of time to meet your cadet's new friends.

report in date to NMMI is 8/4 so it is probably the same situation as last year then...

I certainly can't put her on a flight to CT by herself.. she could handle it.. BUT alas mom cant.. lol

I think I can turn it into a few days business trip :shake: and let the boss pay for my flight :shake: but I am not sure how that will fly.. LOL

Your posts are FILLED will loads of information ...thanks so much!!

Do you think she will be going to NMMI?

I know we looked at both of the schools on the internet, but I don't think we had a preference. MMI was a good fit for her. This past year, she had the opportunity to help the Red Cross with evacuated hurricane Hugo (I think) people from New Orleans (right up the alley of Coast Guard responsibilities:smile:), sweltered through late summer and fall in the South and experienced her first tornado (they went to the basement of their barracks and it must have been a small one - not much damage).

I have heard that the NMMI physical fitness training is more difficult and she could probably have used that, but the academics at MMI were challenging for her and that was good (my D insisted in NOT taking Physics in high school & I think MMI did a good job in getting her up to speed with that). I think the CGA sends alot of football boys to NMMI because they have a stronger football team with better training. Softball/baseball might also be better at NMMI, but I think MMI's girl's softball is pretty good (alot of the CGA girls with softball experience went to MMI). I know we were disappointed that MMI did not have cross country since that was our D's sport, but she wants to do crew at CGA (at least she wanted to last year) and neither school has that.

Anyway, we never did hear why they picked one school over the other for our D, and at this point, it doesn't really matter. It all worked out for the best and she has made some of the best friends she will ever have at MMI!!!!:thumb:

As far as not being able to put her on the plane to CT by herself, if you can swing it, go with her. But if not, don't worry - they will take good care of her. If you can link up with some other CGA Scholar parents beforehand, you could maybe get one of them to tape the event for you. The hardest part of the orientation was not having contact with our D for 9 days and not knowing how she was doing (no phones & she isn't much of a writer:rolleyes:) After that, orientation at MMI was a piece of cake!

Long story & I have to go to church now, but make sure you let us know which school she is going to - I know "bear" and some others here are NMMI folks so they may have pointers if she goes there & I can share more MMI stories if she ends up there. It is an exciting journey that your daughter is about to embark on!! Lucky kids!!!!:biggrin:

1) Prep School
2) CGA Scholars

Same thing: The Coast Guard Academy Scholars program is a one year preparatory scholarship that offers properly motivated young Americans the academic, military, moral, and physical preparation they need for admission to the Coast Guard Academy. CGA Scholars who complete prep school typically receive a full appointment to the Academy for the next entering class.

3) NMMI
4) MMI

The abbreviations of the two schools used by the Coast Guard Academy Scholars program - Marion Military Instituted in Marion, AL, and New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, NM.

Thank you, Luigi. How do people usually find out about the prep schools. Is that information sent from USCGA in a letter to everyone, or certain kids? This is the first I've heard of them and I think I've been all over the website many times.

There is no separate application for the CGAS program, they are picked from the normal academy applicant pool.

It is targeted to candidates who seek to become cadets and officers but need additional academic development in order to succeed at the academy. The CGA scholarship also assists in broadening access to and diversifying the academy corps of cadets.

About 50-60 kids will get CGAS scholarships and about 85% of those will get full appointments after completing the prep program.

The CGAS program was formerly known as CGRIT, the Coast Guard Recruiting Initiative for the Twenty first century.

My son went solo to CT last summer as a prep scholar, and he was fine with it. At least he avoided being embarrassed by my goodbye tears.... I highly suggest that any prep traveling alone arrive a day prior to R-day to avoid time challenges from flight delays. The Academy will have sponsors (local families) available to host incoming preps who need a place to stay the night before R-day.
