I'm a junior who is applying to West Point this coming year. I have a 35 ACT, 3.92 unweighted, and a 4.4 weighted GPA. Triple varsity athlete and team captain for one. Selected to attend Boys State this summer. Do I have a chance of receiving an LOA? Approximately when are LOAs usually sent out?

As far as I understand, the a large portion of LOA recipients are recruited athletes. I’m not sure anyone can tell you what your chances are for receiving an LOA, but based solely on your academics and involvement in sports you seem to be a strong candidate for an appointment. However, you still have to receive a nomination, take and pass your CFA, and get medically qualified - among other things. The appointment is the goal, not the LOA! Good luck.

LOAs can be issued at any time. There is no usual time that LOAs are issued. +1 to makinna. You appear to be a strong candidate. Don't worry about (a very rare) LOA. Instead focus on the appointment. You can probably start those MOC nomination applications now.

I'm no expert, but I also figure your district and state should factor in as well. Depending on your MOC's policies, you could have a shot at a primary nomination or something similar, and that's a big part of it, from what I understand.

Well, not with an LOA. LOAs are issued by the academies. They guarantee an offer of appointment provided the recipient receives a nomination from any source and are otherwise 3Q. It could be a MOC nomination that gets them in, but it doesn't need to be a primary or principal and almost never is.

West Point Applicant '19 your academic stats look incredible! Great job in maintaining such high academic performance. And that stands par with any top programs in the country, academically. I am pretty certain you are academically very competitive! So you are definitely starting competitive. But since no one hear can see your whole package nor should you share so much on this public forum, I agree with everyone here that your potential to receive an LOA is actually difficult to gauge. LOA is given by SAs for different reasons to certain candidates. And it doesn't appear to be given for stellar academics and expected Athletic accomplishments at the SA standard which you have on Athletics. But nothing stellar since you are not all state nor national level nor an Olympic Athlete. If you are please pardon me. Based on our experience and observation of other LOA holders, it appears most common reason for an LOA is:

- highly desired recruited athlete and good-to-strong stats in all other areas
- URM with good-to-strong stats overall, does not include ORM
- applicant from under represented or hard to recruit district with good-to-strong stats
- This one is in your total control but few have it so not common so I believe why it can trigger an LOA. You may not have them all but may have most on this list. This type of candidate would be my ideal LOA candidate over others above and more likely will be more successful Cadets at SAs:
+ stellar academics with strong curriculum and test scores
+ stellar leadership and activities that demonstrate dedication and high quality and relevance with key officer positions
+ Eagle Scout, Summit Scout, Gold Award, Boys/Girls State/Nation
+ JROTC/CAP/Sea Scout
+ strong CFA with all events above average and many near the max
+ strong essays and references demonstrating integrity character ethics and high moral standard and high moral courage with clear aspiration to serve and commission from the Academy
+ excellent athlete that includes your 3-4 Varsity (combo of team and competitive individual sports) for 3-4 years plus Team CPT
+ attained number of significant national awards (non Athletic) that supports your dedication and your activities
+ SA's knowledge that you're just as strong candidate at other SAs you are applying to if you are applying to other SAs.

You don't need Nom and DODMERB pass yet to be offered an LOA, but you most certainly need it for an Appointment. I hope this adds more color to your curiosity.
