I am currently a high school Junior looking to apply to USMMA in the spring and was wondering if I would even be a competitive candidate for USMMA.

GPA: unweighted is a 3.875 and weighted is a 4.35

SAT: 1300. 680 in math and 620 in reading

Rank: 93 out of 710

APs: AP Gov, I will be taking AP US History next semester, and plan on taking AP Calc next year.

Extracurriculars:

- Vice President of school HOSA chapter

- Leadership as an officer and committee member in school Key Club chapter

- Science National Honors Society member

- Volunteer intern at local science museum for summers

- Member of local CERT emergency response team

- 200+ Volunteer Hours

- Member of school jazz band

-Member of my town’s Youth Council

Thanks!

Most candidates have a history of sports, but it is not required. If you have never played a sport, you will need to work on maxing out the CFA to demonstrate a high level of physical fitness. Start now. But that is only part of what sports participation shows. You also need to demonstrate leadership potential and the ability to work as part of a team. You will need to develop these attributes and emphasize these aspects of your history in your essays and interviews. You are on the right track. Good luck!

Your stats look great, some high level sports, (teamwork), participation would look even more over the top.

Wrong. The CFA is Pass/Fail, check in the box. Nothing more or less, unless you're in the admission office. Sports are not required, but they add to your package just like other activities like Band or something. Since you're a junior I would suggest walking on a team. I believe it's a nice boost which it looks like you need because neither your SAT nor ranking are great. As far as I know, USMMA does not add or subtract points to the admissions score of a candidate based on how well or poorly he/she did the CFA. The CFA is pass/fail, maxing it might get you in better shape, but won't get you admitted.

Um....what would you consider a “great” SAT score for USMMA Mr.2020?

You might want to join the track team this spring and next year. It will help with your application and honestly it will help with your fitness. Track has a spot for everyone; sprinter, distance, field, and you'll be a part of a team.

Plus use Khan academy and crack 700 in the math part of your SAT. You're close and Khan definitely helps.

I'd also look into your states Boys State program.

I think you're on the right track but so are a lot of others.

Good luck.

Higher than what you have for sure. Let's be clear, your SAT score is very average. If you don't have the initiative to do better and work harder or you have an attitude like that then save everybody the trouble. You've taken 3 APs and two are social studies which nobody cares about. If you actually make it into KP you're going to be in a tougher spot than most there.

I'm KP 2021... Didn't play sports and your SAT is about where mine was. One thing that would greatly benefit your application is showing leadership positions in all of your activities (president, section leader, treasurer, drum major, small group leader, ETC...). Don't take Mr.2020's advice too close to heart. Could you benefit from more AP classes? Sure... who wouldn't ?!? Throw your hat in the ring kid. I think you have a shot.

As someone who spent a lot of time on here before getting in, my main problem with this website is everyone tries to give you advice on something they can't possibly know anything about. No one knows the admissions formula. No one can accurately tell you how well you're going to do here before you get here. I took everything on here seriously then I got to USMMA and realized 90% of what people will tell you on here is either bs or old info.

I didn't have a sport unless you count shooting (which is an individual sport). I didn't get an amazing score on my CFA. I had a pretty good score on my ACT.

Did most people who go here play a sport? Sure. Did most people that go here get a high ACT/SAT score? Probably. But a lot of us didn't. And none of that is a predictor of how well you'll do here. I know a guy who had around 6 less points on the ACT (composite score) than me and he now has a silver star in academics while I struggled first trimester. So don't let anyone tell you that you'll be off to a worse start here than someone with a better test score cause that stuff means nothing once you get in.

You look like a really good candidate, and if I had to guess I'd say you have a pretty good shot at admission. But again, I don't know anything about the admissions formula so that's just my opinion. Best advice I can give is continue to add stuff to your application and don't just stop doing things once junior year is over. Get your stuff in early, but not so early you leave important stuff off your application that you did after you turned it in. Best of luck to you!

I was a three season "athlete" in high school. Never a starter, and only decent in track. At KP, I was not a pick for any team, and ended up playing rugby most of the time I was in. My SATs were decent, as well as my ACTs. My GPA? Meh, decent, I guess. I was NOT a boy scout or very active in the community, other than working at two jobs.

Hey! I got in with like a 3.4 unweighted GPA. I was a captain of a sports team for a couple years in high school and my ACT score was much higher than I think I deserved, but I was genuinely surprised to get an offer from KP. That being said, sure it would not be a bad idea to partcipate in a sport/team, but you clearly have leadership/teamwork experience on your resume (more than I had). I come from a state where there are barely any KPers, and I've learned that KP actually does consider that as they try to diversify their geographic representation as a student body. Don't let that discourage you if you're from somewhere like Texas (which has a whole lotta applicants in each class, to my knowledge). Either way, definitely apply, but have a backup plan. I literally applied to every service academy because I knew this life is what I wanted. Good luck! Feel free to PM me on here.

Wow......all I can say to all applicants is that it is the total package that gets your admitted to a SA or ROTC scholarship recipient. We don't have a crystal ball to make a determination who is qualified or not qualified and don't be discouraged by naysayers. But a word to the wise is that when you put your stats out there be prepared for scrutiny and critiques that you may not want to hear.
