Chances of getting in USMA with nomination?

I'm just curious. I've been nominated for West Point in one of the most competitive districts in the United States (NJ-05)

I was actually surprised that I got nominated since my ACT scores are low compared to the district average of 32 ACT (I got a 26)

Anyone have insights? Does the nomination do much?

A nomination does plenty. Can’t get into an SA without one. Your candidacy is about much more than your ACT. MOCs, like SAs, look at the whole person.

In the aggregate, about 50% — give or take a few points — of those who are 3Q and have a nomination win offer of appointment. Please note that this does not mean you have a 50% chance.

Congratulations on your nominations. If you are 3q then, as MidCakePa said, you have about a 50 percent chance on average. But this percentage changes wildly depending on who else was nominated with you. If you live in a very competitive district, say the district including NYC, you will have a harder time standing out to admissions when they select their appointee from the slate. But in contrast, if you live in a less competitive district, say rural North Dakota for example, you will have an easier time standing out and receiving the appointment. Good luck on receiving your appointment.

Thank you. I live 10 min away from NYC so it's really competitive. I have a lot of leadership like being president of my school, boys State, multiple SGA offices, 600+ yrs of volunteering, Army ROTC Scholarship, etc, but I have a feeling my GPA and ACTs will make me fall short. I didn't expect to be nominated. Somehow I beat out 100+ applicants for 10 spots

Agree with just about everything @AFWarrior said, except to clarify the 50% piece. About 50% of 3Q with nomination get BFE, which is not the same thing as having a 50% chance. I think @AFWarrior knows that, based on the great examples he/she provided.

I grew up about 10min from NYC - near montclair NJ - I don't remember my district as I've lived in about 20 since then...LOL - Go Jersey!!

No I'm good in all of those

How do you know that you are academically qualified? My DS also has a nomination to USMA from NJ MOC and has a 27 ACT composite and he has no idea if he is 3Q (he passed DODMERB and CFA), in fact FF told him his scores are below average. Good Luck!

First place to look for academic qualification is on the portal home page. Look for a .pdf named "Candidate File Qualified". Some RCs mail these, some don't. Next, according to the Google which is never wrong, enlisted Soldiers can be admitted directly with a 24 in Math and are considered academic risks below that and off to Prep. I have seen where 25 in Math is an academic risk (no source to verify) and must be "waived" by admissions. If his Math and Science are over 26 and there are no super low 20-22 scores in the other categories, I would venture his ACT scores are qualified. That is not to say competitive, but qualified. I have no knowledge of the other items factored into academic qualifications such as gpa, ap classes, teacher evals, height, weight, etc.

I checked with DS and unfortunately there is no Candidate Qualified PDF on his portal....
English 35
Math 26
Science 24
Reading 23
Comp 27
I am assuming the reading and science scores may be disqualifying, he has one more chance to get them up on the February 9th ACT. If not he might possibly be considered for USMAPS according to FF, if not he will be off to AROTC on 3 year Scholarship and possibly reapply for 2024. It’s all good!

Congratulations on your nominations. ... Good luck on receiving your appointment.
