I’m a junior in high school right now and my dream for the longest amount of time has always been to join the Air Force and receive an AFROTC scholarship. I also plan on applying for an Army ROTC scholarship as well just to see.
I was wondering what’s my likelihood of receiving an scholarship from either Air Force or Army and how I can improve??
Here are my stats:

•JV Swim & Dive team: 9th grade
•YMCA Lifeguard & Swim Instructor: 10th grade-present
•Ensemble in school musicals (Guys & Dolls, The Wedding Singer) 9th-10th grade
•Volunteer Instructor for the Safety Around Water Program (@ the YMCA)
•Varsity Letter in Community Service
- volunteer at food bank
- volunteer at Dog Rescue
•Full time Running start student & will graduate high school with my AA degree
•3.8 high school gpa & 3.4 college gpa from running start
•top 20% in my class
•highest score on SAT so far is an 1170 but planning to retake it along with the ACT
• Fastest Mile time is 8min flat
• Fastest Mile & half time ranges from 12:30-13:00

my biggest fear is my lack in athletics but my job (lifeguarding) is kinda like an athletic because I have to stay fit and strong? I was thinking about trying out Track & Field this spring but I wouldn’t be able to letter in community service and that’s important to me. Help??

Start getting more active, workout more and focus on running. You want to make sure you maximize points that you can control (ie PFA, Part of interview, academics). Practice, practice, practice the SAT or ACT, there are so many resources online for free to help you practice for those tests. There's really no reason you can't improve your current scores. I've also never heard of a "varsity letter" in volunteering, as it's more common to just list how many hours you've completed over the years. Get in more shape, get involved in a sport more (unless you're good at swimming and have leagues or something, in that case dedicate your time to swimming and getting good at that), and start trying real hard academically, and I believe you definitely have a shot at getting any one of those scholarships!

Is Community service a Varsity sport? Mile time is very slow. SAT is low! Take SAT and ACT every time it is offered. Hire a tutor if you can. Lack of varsity sport may be a negative. My question as a BGO would be why did you only swim 1 year, musical ensemble 2 years? What have you done this year as a Jr. You have less than 5-6 months to improve your application. Also what schools are you applying to? Too many variable and unknown I would contact your local ROTC persona nd ask them for help! Do this as soon as you can.

Work on your SAT score it is really low as you need a 1240 to even be considered. Also work on your fitness, there is zero reason that within 12 months you can’t max the AF test. As far as athletics go as long as you obtain the benefits of sports from other areas (working as a team, fitness, dedication), and you do well on your PT test to prove it, then there should be little issue with that

Yes thank you! I’m trying really hard. I basically live at the gym between my job and working out 5 days a week. I try to run 3 miles every time I workout and in November I actually competed in my first ever 5K race! And I plan on competing in more 5K’s in the spring, I don’t know if that counts for anything when applying for these scholarships because it’s my free time and not necessarily a sport? But thanks for the advice :)

Yes, I’ve taken the SAT twice and I’m taking the ACT in February and the SAT for a 3rd time in March. And I ended up quitting swim because I focused more on my job as a lifeguard and swim instructor. And this year I plan on doing the musical again, it just hasn’t started yet haha. I’m trying to work out on my own 5-6 days a week but it can really be a battle sometimes but I’m definitely improving :)

I also forgot to add that I competed in my first ever 5K race in November and placed in the top 20% (I placed #410 out of 2809 people. And I plan on racing in at least 3 more 5K races in the spring. I don’t know if that’s something I can add on my resume or helps??

Good luck, keep doing your best with running time, strict chin-ups, push-ups. I suggest you read extensively on military history, philosophy and ethics this will help you with SAT and will impress during your interviews.

Are you female or male? I may have missed this in my quick read of your post. If female, you are not too far off on your running times...

Thanks! I’m trying to do that a lot as well. I can usually make about 40-45 sit-ups in a min and get around 30 push-ups in a min, but I’m not sure how low to the ground I have to go with my push-ups??
I think your run times are passing, but you need to be able to do your run in the same session as your push-ups and sit-ups, so I would occasionally practice all 3 together.

For pushups, your arms need to break a 90 degree angle, you head needs to stay facing forward/up (not looking at the ground), and your back needs to be straight. Depends on who will ultimately proctor your test as to what they'll count, but that's how the Army wants them done.

If it eases your mind I had 0 sports in my lifetime, a 1340 SAT, 91 GPA and got a AFROTC type 1 scholarship. The interview is going to be soo much of your score, how you pitch and say everything is 10000x important than what you did. If you do well on the Interview and are well spoke/liked you can get offered a scholarship on the spot :). Each school has 1 they can offer which skips the entire scholarship selection process

What Leasebacm said. For the interview, remember this:
Avoid filler words.
Maintain eye contact.
Speak clearly and directly.

Good luck to you! As far as the SAT goes, have you connected your results from CollegeBoard to Khan Academy? You will get practice questions like ones missed on the test. It is imperative that you score a 1240 in one sitting (not the best of reading/math combined) Otherwise, you will not get an interview.

My oldest received a scholarship last year without sports, but he was able to max out the PFT.

My youngest is a junior now and not doing anything to try and change his physical fitness. I wish he had your drive ;)
