Just saying, I think you need some more leadership positions.

-Apply for the summer seminar
-Apply for Boy`s State
-More APs

Yes, I agree with Alice....SLS and Boy`s State is good, and if you could get Boy`s State, that along with the Eagle Scout will put you up there!

As you probably know, it`s pretty much anyone`s guess on what will get them in, but look at the class of 2016`s class portrait and that`ll give you a good idea.

Are the APs one`s you`ve already taken? If so, what did you score on the AP exam? I think you should take some more APs....I know that a lot of candidates got in with usually 4 or 5 on average...or maybe that`s not average, but it seems like all those with appointments have something along the lines of that. Up to you, but it`s what I recommend.

But on the plus side, you`ve got plenty of EC`s that definitely helps!:thumb: The community service and response team is definitely a +1 too!

Of course, do well on the SAT. What about ACT? Planning on taking that?

improve your class ranking

either your school is really really good or GPAs are inflated.

4.1 = top 25%

Academic is 60%, supposedly SAT/ACT being half and Class ranking being the other half

Thanks for the info! I am currently taking those AP classes, and I plan on taking more next year. I would have taken them earlier, but my high school does not offer AP courses below junior year. Next year I plan on taking AP Calc as well. Also this year I take the PSAT once more, then the SAT in the springtime. I plan on attempting the ACT some time in the spring as well.

My school is very competitive when it comes to class rank our #1 in class had a 104.3 average last year, #2 was not far behind.

Yeah it`s rough when you can`t take certain classes below a grade, freshman can`t take APs at my school...but luckily, admissions sees who can take what, etc. Yes, ACT is important too....aim for at least a 29, that`s what I`ve heard people say, but I`d personally say aim for 30 or higher....or higher. You get the point :)

Also obtaining a nomination might be a challenge considering my county is one of the most competitive in the tri-state area.

Scouts

On the application it asks if you have been SPL. Try for that leadership position in your troop. Work hard at becoming a team captain. And bring up your class rank.

Yeah, well that won`t help, but it IS do-able....I guess I`m lucky that while I`m in a competitive state, not too competitive a region.

Well I have joint residency in NY and NJ, guess I have to use all of my options. Isn't there a national waiting list for nominations as well? Or is that just for admission to the academy itself?

NWL

When you have been awarded a MOC nomination and tripledQd you will be placed on the NWL hoping for an appointment. The better your WCS, the high you are on the list to be selected. This year as last year very few will be selected from this list as compared to classes five or six years ago. It is important to be as competitive as possible. There are stellar applicants who you are competing against. But the biggest competition is yourself, doing the very best you can and dedicating yourself in the service of our country.

Are you also planning on applying for a ROTC scholarship, senior military institute (VMI, Virginia Tech, The Citadel, Texas A&M, Norwich, North Georgia, etc) as a plan B? Always prepare for the worst, because for anyone, there`s a possibility of not getting in. I`m planning on applying for NROTC-MO, ROTC, and if that doesn`t work, then PLC and then OCS, and if that doesn`t work, then enlist after college. I`ve got plans A, B, C, D, and E planned out, for example. You`ll find the majority of candidates apply for things like that too.

Just my 2 cents of advice.

I agree 100% my second choice of college is VMI. I'm also considering schools that have ROTC programs. I haven't counted out enlisted soldier admissions to West Point either, but that is a very last resort. Also I'm hearing about admissions to the USMAPS as well, but I'm not sure how one becomes qualified for it?

It`s great you`re planning ahead :thumb: (And I didn`t mean that to sound like I think you won`t get in...I just am trying to warn you...it`s tough to get in)

As far as the prep school, you`re automatically considered if you aren`t deemed "qualified enough" for direct appointment. At USMAPS, you`ll take some classes that will help you succed. If it`s offered to you; take it, it`ll get you to West Point. Here`s their site: http://www.usma.edu/USMAPS/SitePages/Home.aspx

Thank you for the info! I understand its a challenge, and although i'll be disappointed if I don't make it, its not the end of the world and I have more options.

Yes, you certainly do! Prep for West Point, and you`ll be preparing for getting a ROTC scholarship, getting into VMI, or a chance to go to USMAPS as well.

USMAPS

USMAPS is a program that you are invited to. You can not apply there and academics are not transferable. It is reserved for applicants that do not academically qualify, however, the Point wants you. For example an athlete who is talented and can contribute to the Core.
