Hey, I'm new to the forums, male, and a rising senior, and I am wondering your opinion on my chances of getting into the Naval Academy.

GPA: 3.5/4.0

SAT: 500 M, 570 V, 570 W

Athletics:
4 Yr. Varsity Letterwinner in Swimming
3 Yr. Varsity Letterwinner in Lacrosse

Clubs:
Fellowship of Christian Athletes, 3 yrs.
Leo's Club: 4 Years, ran Relay for Life

Community:
Youth Group - tutored dis-advantaged children
Habitat for Humanity - Fund Raiser/builder
County Clean-up Organizer - 3 yrs.

Work Experience:
Lifeguard (Pool and Waterfront Certified) - 2 yrs.

Summer Seminar Session 1
Squad leader said she gave me a "really great" recommendation (what does this mean - is it on a points system) because I showed a lot of leadership. I also scored highly on the CFA.

Now, obviously my SAT's are not where I would like them to be, but I will take them again and hopefully do better. But, I am hoping that my activities record, essays, and overall desperate-for-appointment attitude will help with the admissions decision.

Also, how are my chances of getting into the Prep School or Foundation - I haven't spoke to the lacrosse or swimming coaches yet, but are these Prep Programs reserved for Athletes?

Also, does having a relative at the Academy help?

And, I am from a realtively non-competitive area, so will that also help?

Thanks

P.S. I have this posted in the Naval Academy and West Point forums as well.

I don't know if you misposted to the wrong forum, but concerning the Coast Guard Academy, here are some statistics from this years class that just started.

74% of the Class intends to major in engineering, math or science.
30% are female and 18% are from underrepresented racial groups.
Over 50% come from families whose immediate members are in or were in a branch of the U.S. military.
Overall, the SAT average for the class is 1275 (critical reading and math).
3345 students submitted an application; 341 were offered appointments and 275 indviduals will swear-in on R-Day.

Wait a second. Only 341 appointments?

Of course. The entire Academy has less than 1,000 cadets.

Smallest (and probably the hardest of all to gain admission) of all the academies. Just over 10% of applicants were offered an appointment.

And the Cadets are not just from the good 'ol USA. They are chosen from applicants worldwide.

KP is the smallest of the academies with around 300 or less chosen worldwide each year.

Yes, they currently have 14 International students/cadets there.

Their sponsoring country must reimburse the academy approx $34k per year.

From the USCGA website: As the smallest of the five U.S. service academies, the Coast Guard Academy offers the elite higher education, rigorous professional development, and honor and tradition of a military academy but with a more personalized approach.

Damn, first we outsourced our manufacturing, then our telemarketing services, and now we are outsourcing for SA students???

The Code of Federal Regulations has always permitted international students at ALL 5 of the SA's.

I'll look up the relevant statute number if you wish to read it.

Yep, Luigi is correct in quoting the CGA. I should have said that KP is approx.the same in size. KP has 950 students at a given time per page 6 of their catalog. It has a strange feel to it as the kids who go to sea leave the campus kinda quiet. BTW, My kid felt CGA was beautiful. I told him not to voice that opinion outloud....

Ha ha I've been off a few days so I missed this discussion.

Anyway, I happen to know some of the International Cadets personally...have had them at my home...they are great "kids" and among the best and brightest at the Academy.

JM your DS is right...the CGA is a beautiful place...USNWR just gave the CGA it's number two ranking among schools which offer a bachelor's degree only for the Northeast...MMA is on that list too, 12th I think.
