My DS had his AFROTC interview today and he shared that the interviewer was asking him to possibly consider a technical major (My DS listed General Studies). We have done the research and understand the limitations, but I am wondering if it could be changed after the interview, and before the boards?

Does your son actually want a tech major at college? If so, I recommend your DS reach out to the person who interviewed him to say that he's given this a lot of thought to their conversation, and does want to change his major. He also should see if his application is locked and if so reach out to request it be updated with this new decision- or just update it directly. Not sure of options but he needs to take the initiative in these paths above to confirm what he can do.

There is no secret that tech majors have an advantage in the application process for AFROTC - key question though, will your son get through and enjoy tech courses? Read other threads here where young people gamed the system by going for a tech scholarship, and got the scholarship but now are stuck in classes they don't want-or risk losing the scholarship - they are Les Miserables.

I’ve had 4 go through college, and it’s SO important to enjoy your major. It’s hard enough to beth through 4 difficult years of change and growing up. Its Almost impossible if you aren’t happy.

I think this cannot be overstated: choose something you enjoy. If unsure, take some aptitude tests (free online). Talk to adults that know you and your strengths (counselors, coaches, teachers). It’s super important, especially with an ROTC program where you cannot easily (if at all) change, to put some real thought into this.

My two that went through college not on a program, changed majors. My DD did it 4 times 🙄.

Is the difficulty in changing majors associated with being in ROTC? Or associated with being on ROTC scholarship? We're just learning about ROTC and want to understand better the impact on the college experience as it related to things like changing major. Would appreciate hearing your thoughts on this.

I’m sure someone else can speak better to this, but I know when you fill out the AFROTC and NROTC scholarship applications directly out of high school, you have to select your major. I don’t have personal experience with trying to change majors, as my boys that were awarded scholarships ultimately selected USNA.

You can try using the search function at the top of the page here in the forums, or simply googling the subject (which will also most likely connect you to appropriate threads here in the forums). Either will bring up discussion about the subject you are looking for.

You must have permission from the CoC (brigade level?),, in all cases, to change your major. You will also need to show you can still complete your new major on time. In the services that draw definite distinctions between majors (eg. AF and Navy Option) moving from a technical major to a non-technical (or "lower ranked") major is very difficult. It can also result in losing the scholarship.
