Changing schools?

We are very proud of our son, who recently received notification of being a 4-year NROTC selectee! We tried to let him drive the process as much as possible, and somehow none of us were aware that it is a tuition-only (with books, uniform, and stipend) scholarship. His '#1 school does not offer supplemental support for room and board, and quite frankly, we can't afford it. At the same time, he is being pursued by other schools. How hard is it to move the NROTC scholarship to other schools on a student's list? Can a student move to schools off their list? Is finances a sufficient reason for requesting the move?

You can usually move a scholarship from one school to the next on your list somewhat easily. I believe you have to get the OK from the recipient school and the new school. Cost of school can be a issue if you are going from a less expensive school to a more expensive school (state college to a Ivy league school as example). This is also predicated on the new school having room for incoming freshman. Some schools are full, but only a few.

If your new selected school is not on your list, and it has a NROTC detachment. then it is possible to switch to this new school, but it has to be OK'd by both schools and NSTC(or equivalent).

Your best bet is to get accepted into the other schools you are considering and make a request.

Your son should return to the primary source - the netc.navy.mil website below- and comb through it.

This is a good page to explore, looking for schools offering additional benefits to NROTC scholarship winners.

Your son just needs to do the legwork. Good point made above about calling the unit at the potential new school to see if there is still room, as well as determining if it is a higher cost school. And when it’s time to state the reason for the shift request, a simple “My parents and I have discussed the room and board cost at Original U, and this is not feasible for us.” He doesn’t have to fall on his sword about having just learned a valuable lesson about paying attention to detail and sharing that he missed to part about tuition only.

It may be worth a try at Original U to let them know he has that NROTC scholarship for tuition, but needs help with room and board, is there any merit aid available from the school.

Good luck - plenty of great options out there!

How different in costs are room and board for his choices? Most schools are roughly the same when it comes to R&B.

Thank you so much! He has been accepted into all 5 from his list. Two of which give support for R&B; one gave him significant merit, so he has asked if that will be able to be applied to R&B if he uses his NROTC for tuition.

Thank you so much! He has spent more focused time and (hopefully) learned not to assume anything. Asking for merit at school 1 is a good idea. I will have him pursue that as well.

Sir - thank you for all of your guidance on this forum. Son sent in the required form over a month ago to change schools. But has received no word if it was approved or denied. He reached out to his contact at the school he wishes to move his scholarship to, and they are out of internet reach (at sea.) He does not have a 'recruiter' assigned to him that he knows of. What is the best way to determine if his request was approved? Thank you for your help!
