Hi all,

I was just contacted by admissions regarding a Character Review Committee and that my record was referred to this Character Review Committee? I really want to ask how this would work and how much of a shot do I got after this and how badly this would mess me up?

I would look at it as a plus. They want some answers to something that they're wondering about. Which way it goes is anyone's guess, but it's a plus because that means they're looking at you, rather than just pushing your application asside or pigeonholing it some other way.

Ummm, it was because of something that I had to report in my application
 
Right. So they want you to explain it. Maybe they want you to explain how you're not going to do whatever it is again and what you learned from the experience.

What you do NOT want to do it tell anyone here what it is. It is no one's business but yours and (ostensibly) the Character Review Committee's.
Tell the truth and show them what you're made of.

The Character Review Committee lives up to its name. You don’t give us much to go on, and I am NOT asking for elaboration.

Either you have reported or included something in your application that is causing concern, something someone else has reported is causing them to evaluate the issue, or some other issue has come to light. They will assess the facts on a case basis, refer to current policy, research past precedent, look at your entire application to weigh the merits against whatever issue triggered this. There a a process, and they will follow it. I suspect they will draw up a report of their findings and recommendations for the Dean of Admissions.

Would it help to dm you to talk more of this and see more in depth realistically? I know I wouldn't be comfortable in sharing it with the whole forum what happened.

You can get into the USNA with suspensions and arrests. All the Character Review Committee is just a screening to make sure that there is nothing to hinder your gaining of a security clearance.
When dealing with the USNA CRC make sure that supply them with MORE than enough information. You want to make CERTAIN that you show them you are willing to cooperate and that you are not withholding ANY information.
I personally had to go through the CRC and was approved. Now I am working on my Security Clearance and getting ready to explain the situation all over again. But I know that it is a closed cased and the USNA knows EVERYTHING already.
It it perfectly alright to feel discouraged when going through the CRC, against kids who have perfect records, but remember IT IS WHAT IT IS. Just be very proactive with them and supply them with MORE than enough information.

No one here can tell you the probable outcome. Continue being honest, acknowledge better choices could have and will be made moving forward. That’s what is in your control.

The probability of a positive outcome will be aided immensely by you telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth -- just as you've done to this point. If you're SA-bound, do so with your head held high, knowing you were honest, forthcoming and professional. And if you're not SA-bound, you can still hold your head high, knowing that you were honest, forthcoming and professional.

Now do I have a chance based off the offense in question? I won't say much about the details but I can say that I was only suspended from school; I would be ten times more worried had we been talking about a criminal charge.

And DON’T let your imagination...

This is not necessarily the kiss of death. It’s a pause to reflect and assess.
 
Sometimes I think candidates and parents, new to USNA, think they have to be perfectly perfect, exceptionally exceptional, best of the best to receive an appointment. Not true!! They are looking for candidates that can become future Naval or Marine Officers. Leaders. Imo, people who have struggled, failed, learns and grown have an edge. It’s even a focus of the essay. USNA knows kids mess up. They don’t expect perfect little angels.

OP, prepare for this like you would an interview. Be honest, open, expressing how you have learned and grown from this.

As already stated, no one here can even begin to assess anything about the outcome or probability. So don’t even try. I know you are looking for reassurance, but no one here can give it to you.

Settle your mind with the knowledge that they wouldn’t ask for this if they weren’t interested in you...it’s not a rejection! And you should NOT share here. You don’t want anything in writing permanently forevermore on the internet that could come back and cause problems.

Be honest. Speak well. Be open. This isn’t them trying to ‘get you’. It’s them gathering more information to make a decision.

If it helps, I know someone very well who got arrested for a boneheaded thing before freshman year in high school, laid it all out exactly as it happened on his application, and was accepted. Be honest and forthright- all you can (and must) do. Good luck.
 
The Character Review Committee reviews and researches character issues that are raised by the record where there is incomplete info. The committee is comprised of the Dean of Admissions and several others including a clinical psychologist. Sometimes the BGO is involved in researching the issue. The committee provides a recommendation to the Admissions board, who will then review the full record and determine 'qualified' or 'not qualified.

Lots of things could trigger the character review, none of them good, but many are not deal breakers. Things like being arrested, or worse convicted of any crime, getting suspended from school, are obvious ones. It also includes things like getting caught cheating on tests, plagiarizing, etc. These days I wouldn't be surprised if questionable social media posts would also trigger a character review, given the recent history of mids with problematic posts.

It's not just limited to things that would prevent a future security clearance.

Getting suspended for smoking pot behind the gym one time probably isn't a killer. Getting arrested for selling drugs in school probably is a killer. Lots of things in between. There is a very wide range of things that could trigger a character review, as posted by other above, best advice is to be completely forthcoming and truthful.
