DS is taking some summer courses for Calc and physics. cortramid is canceled so changing approach
Calc I and II and Physics I and Ii are required for Navy option NROTC apparently requires these be taken at the midshipman ‘s school or another school that has a NROTC unit or crosstown affiliate.

Does anyone know of schools that might be cheapest online courses this summer which also are online and at a school w a NROTC unit? Do any community colleges with online courses have cross town affiliates or units? Thank you.

Make sure your MIDN is letting their LT know they are taking summer classes. In the past the Navy has covered the entirety, or partially, Physics/Calc that have been taken at other schools during the summer. I think the deadline to let them know was last week... follow up with your LT asap.

Word our unit got was due to high interest there is no Navy funding for summer classes this year. Additionally, I seem to recall that 6 semester hours of physics and calculus is required, at least 3 credit hours of which must be taken at the midshipman's unit, so make sure your DS keeps that in mind.

Theoretically, they could take Calc/Physics I this summer and then complete Calc/Physics II during the year at their university. The one thing to consider is the difficulty of community college courses versus your son's university. He could be setting himself up for failure if he takes a very easy Calc I course and then struggles in Calc II as a result.

The easiest thing to do is have your son contact their advisor via email to ensure that the courses they take this summer will be validated.

It’s also something to consider for incoming freshman...I know it wont be covered in any way. A ‘once-over’ of DS’s incoming transcripts resulted in additional scholarship money from the university if he took an additional language class this summer. He will need to decide if that net amount is worth it.

IMO, what else is there to do this summer 🙄? He can think of it as a job!!

@Herman_Snerd wanted to point out one more thing for your DS to check on (perhaps already complete).

From the Regulations for Officer Development (para 3-5 2.c): Classes taken via distance learning (e.g., online, videotape) are not acceptable for fulfilling the NROTC academic program, unless the host university accepts the course for transcript credit with a letter grade. In no case shall NROTC units accept distance learning for calculus, physics, or Naval Science classes.

Last sentence is the critical one. These are exceptional times we are living in so NSTC may make an exception to this policy and accept the online Calc class. Best to have DS check.

Worst case scenario, is if you take the class at a local college, with the understanding that you take it again at your home school, it may give you an advantage in learning and a final grade in the long run...especially if it is a very challenging class. Just a random thought- since there is no summert training. It is what I told my mid- the summer grade won't matter, but you will get a bass in the subject, and it will help lighten the load during the regular semester. There are lots of pre-med students that doing this apparently, for Orgo chem, as I learned from friend.

All summer courses for my university are online and I'm taking my physics 2 requirement online because I was forced to. I'm sure NSTC will waive the requirement for this summer. Also worth noting, that when I retook Calc 2, I was allowed to do so online, because I had already "passed" the in person class with a grade that sufficed for NROTC.

This is what DS university communicated:
NSTC has given temporary permission to take Calculus and Physics Online this summer with stips:

1. The University must not offer in person.
2. The remote class must be identical to the classroom version regarding content.
3. The remote class must be thru the Host University.

Hope this helps

This is what my daughter did. She took an orgo chem summer class at local college missing the first week due to summer training. I paid for it, as I told her worse case scenario if she doesn't do well, no one cares because it would not count at her school, but it gave her a solid background for when she took it at her college, which helped ease her stress with a heavy courseload semester. As my dad taught me- 'Education is never a waste.'
