Check List Please Add

I don't recall any requirement for a duffle bag, and I'm not sure backpacks would be permitted. I highly doubt that any bag is specifically expected since everything you need (including a seabag) will be issued. Those huge sacks you see new Plebes running around with on the first day are issued laundry bags that they drop your stuff into.

Regarding the seabag, back in my day they issued a cheapo white one. As a NAPSter, I showed up with my issue GI green one. I still have that one, in fact.

For the women, 6 bras and panties aren't heavy. If you're really worried, skip the panties but definitely take the bras as size/fit is a real issue and the last thing you need is to be uncomfortable. I'd have your folks care package some extras as laundry is only done once a week and you will sweat through one at PEP and another during the day. And, while you can wash them in the sink, they'll take forever to dry and you can't just leave them hanging out in your room.

Agree on wearing your running shoes. Other than that, take the bare minimum. You can survive on whatever toiletries they give you for a few days. You will get a Midstore run and your care package will arrive.

Whatever you do, don't take ANYTHING of value on I-Day other than your cellphone and I'd take the cheapest one you can find. It will all get taken away and you may not get it back. I'm not suggesting people steal; rather, with ~1200 bags stashed somewhere, things get lost, misplaced, etc.

What about sports equipment? We were told to bring it for the summer sport sessions. He plays lacrosse which includes helmet, shoulder pads. stick etc. Which would need to be in a bag on it own.

Cleats

And we were told that our son should bring his cleats for Sprint Football...?

Yes, your child should bring equipment for any sport he/she plays or is planning to try out to play.

I would call the LAX coach and ask - my guess is the NA will provide all the required equipment with the possible exception of a stick and cleats.

I would call ANY coach and ask.

Let's face it, the last thing you want is to be hauling a pile of sports gear on I-Day. If it is issued or if it can be mailed or picked up later, I strongly recommend going that route.

Are you suggesting that the plebes buy the white socks, undies, shirts because the issued stuff isn't comfortable? Or do they just need more than the 18 shirts that they are given? I'm confused. I've heard over and over again that they just show up with the clothes on their back but then lists come out and put doubt into my mind.

I am bit confused by this list also. I was planning on wearing my running shoes, and carrying my cell phone, wallet, and two pairs of compression shorts in my pocket. Is there really any need for anything else? And what is the point in bringing a bag? It is just something else to carry around all day. Advice on bag or no bag?

Daughter is finishing Leatherneck this week. She has used Body Glide for the past three years. She now considers Gold Bond powder the best thing ever invented. I suggest that both be included in the first Care Package.

It's easy to be.

Let me say it again (Let me be clear.): USNA will issue a Plebe EVERYTHING they NEED to get through Plebe Summer and beyond, right down to their underwear and socks. Unless things have changed, what they issue is Hanes brand, which isn't bad at all. When it comes to feminine garments, I'm afraid I can't speak from experience, but I don't remember a whole lot of women packing in undergarments on I-Day.

If you are able to carry all your stuff on your person, then by all means ditch the bag; it will just be one more piece of gear to haul around all day. If you MUST bring a bag, make it a light one and just big enough to carry what you are bringing. I would look into bringing a backpack because I doubt they will let you wear it once you are in a formation, so a small gym bag will probably be your best bet.

Again, this is only IF you need to carry something that you can't bring in on your person. If I were doing it all over again, I'd show up in a pair of broken-in running shoes, a set of wash-and-wear undergarments, a pair of light-colored hiking trousers that are LIGHT and BREATH, and a PLAIN (no designs, logos, or anything else) T-shirt. I'd have my wallet (emptied of everything except maybe a debit card, $50 in cash max, and my SS Card) my cell phone and charger, my eyeglasses (contact lenses), a small tube of sunscreen, my paperwork, and one pair of wash-and wear britches. As I mentioned before, if I could sneak in my SwissTool and a MicroLight, I'd do that, too. If I were on prescription meds, I'd bring them AND a copy of the prescription. Same goes for things like knee braces, etc., that you may be needing to wear.

THAT'S IT. You can live a day or two in the (highly unlikely - read almost impossible) chance that you don't get a Box Issue that day. You can brush your teeth the next day. Your classmates will provide a needed bar of soap, a towel, and even deoderant. Big woop. Marines on Iwo Jima went WEEKS without taking their trousers off because doing so meant exposure to enemy fire and death. If they can do that, you can wear the same undies for two days. If worse comes to worse, you can wash your undies in the sink, wring them out, and throw them over your chair when you hit the rack that night. With Bancroft now being A/C'd, they'll dry just fine. This only works with wash-and-wear, and dear LORD DON'T GET THE 100% POLYESTER ONES! YUCK! Ladies would probably want to bring along an extra sports bra.

The first thing that will happen to you uniform-wise will be to have you remove whatever shirt you have on and don a USNA issue blue-rim T-shirt and your Dixie Cup. That's why I recommend coming in a simple t-shirt; it's going to be taken off, wadded up, and stuffed someplace very soon, so don't wear a good one. If your waist is such that pants don't want to stay on, bring a black web belt with a standard military buckle; at least you'll be able to use that later. Better still, get a pair of hiking trousers that you can adjust, and skip the belt altogether.

ETA: Oh, and in order to avoid immortality for all the wrong reasons, DON'T show up as one of my NAPS classmates did for INDOC: wearing a shirt with a huge marijuana leaf on it. It doesn't go over well. :thumb:

Very good information.I sure they could show up with the cloths on your back and you'll be fine. I've slightly revised MY check list and most of the information comes from either local parent information sites or directly from the information packet. Just a guild feel free to add or subtract items.

USNAwaterpolo -

I am with you - doing exactly what you are doing and bringing only what I am wearing along with the very bare minimum. My mom will be sending a care package with other items before I leave so that I will receive it shortly after I arrive - with the understanding that we aren't allowed to receive anything until July 3rd.

USNA1985 also mentioned a trip to the mid store so it doesn't make much sense to bring much of anything.

See everyone in 9 days!

The old ticker is working again...

Pledge polish
Shoelaces (Black and White)
Whisk Broom
Masking Tape
Ruler
Bedsheets (Fitted and Flat)
Bedspreads
Pillowcases
Blanket
Combination Lock

What else, what else.....

removing half the tshirts, socks, underwear and sending in care package along with doubles of any toiletries. should lighten the load, especially if son wears his tennis shoes.

USNA1985 also mentioned a trip to the mid store so it doesn't make much sense to bring much of anything.

In MY day, we went to the Midsstore within the first few days of Plebe Summer. I should note that the primary reason was to buy supplies with which to clean our room (e.g., floor wax:shake:). We did have a few minutes for toiletries.

As Zaphod says (and his memory sure beats mine), they give you everything you need. Now, they may give you Crest toothpaste and you prefer Colgate. Or they give you Mennen deoderant and you prefer . . . whatever. The deal is that you can live with whatever they give you for a few days (until the care package arrives) and, worst case, can live with it all summer.

For the women, it appears they are now issuing sports bras, which was NOT done in my day. You didn't bring 'em, you didn't have 'em. So, things have changed. Give that, I'd still bring a few that you know fit really well. See how the ones they issue you fit and, if you don't like them, have more come via care package.

If they say to bring a calculator, I'd do it. Make it CHEAP. However, I'm guessing that, if you don't bring one, they have a limited number they will provide. Just a guess on that, though.

I brought a VERY small gym-style bag. In my day, we were also issued running shoes, so didn't need those. It was cheap and did provide a place in which they could stash my civilian clothes for keeping over the summer. You are okay with that. Just make it lightweight, super small, and cheap. That way, it's easy to carry, doesn't make you look like a moron, and you won't worry if it gets lost.

Finally, agree with Zaphod on NEUTRAL clothing. Women, wear shorts or slacks, not skirts (as many of us did 30 yrs ago:rolleyes:). A plain shirt is perfect -- logos will only give the detailers and early and easy opportunity to pick on you.

Tumblers (that's drinking cups)
Bucket
Sponge Mop
Scrub Brush

....and for some reason, I remember a desk blotter....

A copy of "A Message to Garcia"
Shirt Stays (God, I HATED those things! Learn to give yourself a good tuck and get rid of them!)
Collar Stays (be sure they don't poke through the collar material!)
Tie bar
Cufflinks

And the issues will continue as the summer goes on...

Summer White Shirts
Summer White Trousers
Midshipman Covers
WUBD Shirts (SWB? Whatever the hell they call it these days)
WUBA Shirts (WWB? See above)
Drill Trousers
SDB Shirts
SDB Jackets (blouses)
SDB Trousers
Neckties
Reefer
Overcoat
Scarves
Suspenders
FDB Trousers
FDB Jacket (Blouse)
DDB Jacket
DDB Shirts
Bowtie
Cumerbund
SDB Anchor Insignia
Sweat Gear
Campus Jacket (Why they ever got rid of the issue Eisenhower jacket is beyond me)
Wooley Pulley Sweater (? - They used to)
Khaki Shirts
Khaki Trousers
Cammies (new - not in my day)
Computer
Watch Cap
Grey Gloves
White Gloves

...and on..... and on....... and on.......
