You don't need a camera. You won't be sightseeing.

Carry, at most, one set of underwear and socks. WEAR your running shoes.

By the end of the day, you'll have everything you need, and I do mean EVERYTHING you NEED.

Put on sunscreen the morning you report, preferably one that doesn't smell and which is sweat-resistant.

Leave everything other than required paperwork, prescription meds, glasses, etc., at home.

How about:

I-Day:
Cell phone and charger
Calculator
Passport (Do they need this, and if so, when?)

Care package:
Bengay or other muscle rub (Can they have this? Advice, please.)
Favorite HOMEMADE goodies, with enough to share
plastic air tight/ mouse proof small storage box

Good list.

And may I recommend, for those plebes-to-be who might need it, a small lesson on the difference between what a bleach pen and a stain stick do. We do a lot of emergency laundry uniform rescues over here for the sponsor family, and one of my rescue failures was a young man who had mixed up bleach stick function with stain stick function, and his dark trow looked like clown pants...:yllol:

Arm & Hammer white baking soda and peroxide toothpaste, small tube, solves a lot of scuff marks on white shoes and stains on white uniforms and cap covers too...

Oh, that sunscreen recommended by Zaphod, put it on tops of ears, up into hairline and parts for the women and all over the darn head for those men who arrive already shorn. Lots of beet-red faces, ears and scalps by the end of the day, for those with skin that tends that way.

Zaph, I assume they will be provided sunscreen during the course of the summer. Is that correct? Husband just had his first battle with skin cancer, so we're kind of hyper-concerned about sunburn right now.

IIRC, there is a list that USNA puts out for what the Plebes should bring. A calculator is on there. I sure don't recall seeing more than one night's necessities on any list. Remember, anything you pack in you will be hauling around all day. It's NOT FUN TO BEGIN WITH. Don't make it worse.

Obviously, if ladies have particular needs arising from their being ladies, then that should be in the first care package to arrive. I wouldn't show up carrying two month's worth...

And yes, the sunscreen lesson was one I learned the hard way when a M/C at NAPS. WHOOOOOOO-EE! Take about a RED face and a WHITE forehead!

I honestly don't remember, and Lord knows that with everything else that has changed over 19 years, the standard Box Issue can't have possibly remain unchanged.

To be safe, bring a (small) container with you. Some of the stick products (rather than lotion) are ideal because they weigh less and take up less room.

Annapolis during the summer is a sweltering armpit of a swamp with God Himself holding a damned magnifying glass between it and the sun. IT SUCKS.

Camera is for Dad to take pictures of brothers/Mom/and sister crying.

I don't know if they can or can't, but you DON'T want to be the one smelling up the place. It'll tag you as a wuss.

"Oh, the poor baby! Your tootsies hurt, precious?"

Amen, used to live there...right now we're in Alabama, so DS should be acclimated! Boy, do I miss the arid west and Alaska!!

Thanks for the sunscreen advice. What about the muscle rub?

One thing I carried in and kept well-hidden was a Victorinox Swiss Army Knife.

I understand that these days that may be a no-go, and I really have no idea if it was in my day, too, but I brought it anyway. Absolutely essential when trimming nails, removing splinters, or any one of a thousand other little needs.

There are some no-odor muscle rubs out there, but I can't attest to their effectiveness.

Agree with Zaphod, you don't want to be the one wearing Tiger Balm (you know that one when you smell it, but danged if it doesn't work) + heat + close quarters = classmates' eyes watering, everyone sniffing and detailers homing in on you. :shake:

Good point by Zaphod - using something like Tiger Balm (you know that one when you smell it) + heat + closed quarters = everyone blinking, sniffing and detailers homing in on you.:shake:

If there is a NO-scent (not "low" scent) version, then I guess that's OK.

Tiger Balm, while some wonderful stuff, will be like a blood trail in the water: the sharks WILL find you.

BTW, NONE of this should be taken to mean that if USNA Medical issues you a lotion or something that smells, that you SHOULDN'T use it. Let's keep some sense of proportion and logic, here....

A few girls from last year recommended mailing those stuff in b/c since we are going to have a huge bag of issued items to carry and it'll just be a hassle to carry even more clothes. They said we can survive with granny panties for a few days before our preferred undergarments arrived.

Bring a TUBE (not a CAN) of extra-strength Lotrimin. With the heat and humidity, jock itch and athlete's foot is not unusual, and the Cruex stuff they used to sell in the Midstore was worthless.

Assuming things haven't changed, you will be issued foot powder as part of your box issue. USE IT.

Do we need to bring clothes and tolietries? I was told by someone that we would be better off just bringing a duffel bag, your forms, social security card, phone and charger, and to wear your running shoes. He said everything else would be extra stuff to carry and find space to store.

I keep reading that we need to bring a duffel bag. what is meant by "duffel bag?" i'm assuming that its not a green sea-bag, but a sports duffel bag. This is just used to hold our civilian clothes and the things we can't have, right? is it okay if I just have a backpack instead?
