A Navy ship was recovering the underwater "drone" when a Chinese navy ship swooped in and recovered it first?

How does this happen?

A Chinese vessel can more quickly recover an undersea craft than the US vessel that launched (and controlled it).

I think it's time for the Navy to retire the "Don't Give Up The Ship" flags... it's clearly not the case these days.

Just a little humor...no desire for inter-service warfare, plenty of that for the 4 stars to engage in...

Not like they took from an actual warship, USNS with civilian crew.
Only 50 miles from Subic Bay. Nowhere near contested waters.
Seems like they are trying to send a message.

Yup! Don't call Taiwan.... or else! I don't see them quitting on pressing us for the near future anyway.

Come on, is anyone surprised? Mindless antagonism has consequences.

Ever heard of the Nine Dash Line?

I think the only people on the planet who would consider 50 miles from Subic Bay as "uncontested" would be the Mainland and Taiwan Chinese. I am not sure how close the line actually is to the Philippines, but if the drone was inside the line, the PRC would say those are sovereign Chinese territorial waters.

It's definitely a message.

This is going to be a fun four or eight years.

Yes and only time will tell if Trump will be better or worse than Obama. Some China experts believe that Chinese are pretty clear about what they want, rather we, US, are bad at reading and understanding Chinese messages. If someone asked me, I will say Chinese will make unofficial concessions in the South China Sea if we allowed them to save their face. In a bigger scheme of things, fishing rights and natural resources in the South China Sea might not be the worth resource expanded to obtain them. However, China can't seen to be back down. So if US reached an understanding with Chinese that we will stay neutral, the Chinese might have been less aggressive in the South China Sea.

Hummmm, interesting. Since the information is scripted and edited, we can only guess what really took place. What piqued my interest, how did the Chinese discover the drone? How did they recover the drone? What did we learn from the abilities? Did we underestimate their abilities? Do they have advanced technologies we never knew about? Or did they pass or fail the test we presented to them? There is much more going on we will never know about. If was just announced from Washington, whatever retaliation we do to Russia, if they tampered with the election, (like we never do that to control a more favorable outcome) the public will be blind.

I can't resist

So are you telling me that an Army deserter is an equivalent to Navy sailors performing their duties?

Bergdahl knew where he was and what he was doing.

The US sailors didn't know where they were. Must have left the astrolabe and hourglass ashore.

The Chinese vessel was 500 yards away from the US vessel, so they probably watched the drone launched through a good set of Marine binoculars. Then they probably tracked it with the same equipment they use to detect and track torpedoes.

Gotta go with Scout on this and the Iranian capture of our sailors.

Both small potatoes compared to the Maersk Alabama rescue.

No...just matching sarcasm with sarcasm....each of these is viewed differently under articles of the UCMJ and for potential Code of Conduct violations.

Merely pointing out that no service is exempt from high profile events where military personnel violated the UCMJ, standards of conduct, failed to live up to the Code of Conduct or perform their duties as expected of them by the chain of command. A previous Admiral I worked for spoke frequently of the significance of the "strategic corporal" who does something criminal or stupid in Okinawa and how United States strategic policy gets affected in a negative way.

In the case of the Riverine Force sailors, the investigation concluded that the mission was poorly planned and executed and that their unit training was not up to standards. Everyone in the chain of command was relieved for cause...as they should have been.

Let me guess, the highest ranking officer that got relieved was 05 or below. It happens in all branhes, but general officers and admirals usually don't get held accountable. In a CNN article, a commentator made a comment that he didn't understand why those two boats were making a 300 mile trip. Perhaps in the Navy, an O5 could make a decision to make a 300 miles trip in a very sensitive area, but fact that it was allowed to happen in the first place with "poorly planned and executed and their unit training was not up to standards" makes me believe the issue is a lot higher than O5 level.

Why were thr riverbine force deployed in the first place? Perhaps, strategically they didn't neeed to be there but tactically someone wanted their medals and ribbons.
