Does anyone have any experience with a chondromalacia waiver? DS has had 3 meniscus surgeries, so it was not surprising. He does not have any recurring issues and is a full activity is sport. Do coaches have any input on waivers for recruited athletes?

If the opinion does not come from a doctor DODMERB will not care for it and it will not have any weight in getting a waiver.

It is my understanding that DoDMERB is not the ones that issue the waivers, it is the Service Academy themselves. Each Academy has a waiver official. My thought is that if you have a recruited athlete a coach may at the very least be able to help expedite a decision one way or another.

If you go to this page: http://dodmerb.tricare.osd.mil you will see a document titled something like "Questions about the process"

It clearly states that if it is not Medical Records or medical notes written by a doctor among other things they mention then it will not have weight in the waiver process with the specific SA or ROTC service.

By all means I recommend you contact DODMERB of you have any questions on your specific concern.
