I've been looking at airfare, and wondering if I book something that flys out at 8pm on the 22nd of December, I would be safe in my mid being done with all yard obligations. Any input appreciated?

Book with Southwest if you can...then change it earlier/later based on the actual leave date. No change fees for SW make it a good choice for traveling cadets/plebes. Good luck.

According to the Academic calendar, Finals conclude on 21 Dec.

That is true, however a Mid may leave on winter break as soon as they are finished with all military obligations - so if their last final is on say the 17th and they don't have anymore military obligations - then they are free to leave on that day. Trust me your Plebe will not want to sit around for 3 or 4 days waiting for a flight that was booked before they knew their schedule. This is way too early to be booking flights for Winter break. Thanksgiving is much more of a known to book this early, but not winter break. They will get their final schedule mid semester and will also know if they have any other obligations about the same time. It may cost you more but a happy Plebe is worth the extra cost!

This happened to us last year....and profmom is right. Your plebe will be anxious to get outta dodge asap.

I've not found the date of Reform after the Christmas/Winter Break..help:confused: !!...I usually book my Mid's flight back to BWI and leave the flight home for him to arrange himself as he has a better focus on when he can leave the Yard.

I see classes begin January 11. Last year, seems like they came in on Friday before classes beginning on a Monday or Tuesday.........

Last year our then plebe son got out early from classes too ... originally sheduled to have classes right up until the last minute ... then got to leave 4DAYS earlier ... so yes, hold off ... plus I had litterally just bought his ticket home five minutes before he called to say he could come earlier ... Southwest indeed changed it for NO COST ... a great relief! I too like to plan ahead ... but am learning to roll with the "semper gumby" mode that the Academy requires ... good luck ... !

I have booked the Thanksgiving and Christmas break flights already. I tried to book Thanksgiving several weeks ago and Soutwest was already sold out, so I booked on an available airline and ended up paying almost $500 for a usually less than $200 flight. So of course I have already booked Christmas on Soutwest and will change accordingly, but the cost of the flights close to Christmas are already going up. I think I booked Christmas out late Dec 21, back Jan 9.

2011 expiration of leave - MHO

The Commandant and Academic calendars on usna.edu show Thursday, 6 Jan, 2011, as the last day for end of semester leave. That usually means sometime on the 6th, midshipmen leave expires. The beginning of classes usually comes a few days later. There are always the obligatory mando briefings, admin time, Supe's and Dant's calls, etc., in the block of time before classes begin.

For some reason, the term "Reform" usually appears in conjunction with the start of the academic year, when the Brigade returns from their summer journeys and incorporates the new class. I don't recall seeing it used for the start of the spring semester, but usages change.

As always, the plebe or mid will be responsible for knowing the schedule. Midshipmen may also be required to come back even earlier, if their sport or activity requires it, or there are academic/performance/honor/conduct issue hearings that are scheduled. :biggrin:All part of military life. Leave is a privilege, and it usually works as advertised, but "stuff happens." As always, family gets to flex right along!
