Hi all, can anyone that has been down this road please give rough (Or Precise) numbers on the total costs per year of VMI and or the Citadel after applying a full 4 year AROTC scholarship towards the out of state tuition and fees? Having a tough time getting direct answers. Thanks in advance.

For The Citadel, 2018-2019 freshman out of state tuition is $36,551, so the Army ROTC scholarship would pay for a qualified cadet, that amount plus the book allowance and stipend. (In-state tuition would be $14,135)

Room and Board is $7,442 plus travel, and other misc. expenses, so it would likely be comparable to VMI, or about $10,000.

Here is a chart of the cost of attendance breakdown for The Citadel:

DD has a 3 year AFROTC scholarship and a 4 year AROTC scholarship. To be honest, at this stage Norwich and the Citadel are the clear leaders in the way they quickly and efficiently answer questions and provide information. General overall helpfulness of both admissions offices and ROTC reps are great.
VMI, not so much.

Thanks everyone!

... And they'll pay income tax on every penny of it. Still, that better than paying the full amount to the school.

Note that Norwich pays R & B for ROTC scholarship cadets. That is worth roughly $13,372 per year for 4 years, or $53,488.

Yes, the people at Norwich have been great! Because they are a private university, they have far more leeway in attracting candidates. They have been superb. The Citadel has done very well too. Norwich has more of a "Family" feel so far. Plus, winter is the best is the best 9 months of the year there! (Only drawback it seems...) The Citadel has advantages as well with incentives. The visits in March will make the difference.

Thanks!

Is it VMI Admissions or the ROTCs where you are having difficulty?

I left out the names. But, in quotes is the body of the e mail I received in reply to my very detailed and specific e mail query to VMI. This is an ROTC rep.
Copied and pasted verbatim.

"She the attached Finance Sheet for VMI. Room, Board, and Quartermaster Charge is not covered by the scholarship. You can Financial Aid Office for other scholarships or loans that are available (540) 464-7208.
We do not have a Cyber-Security major. We do have Computer and Information Science major and Electrical and Computer Engineering major that will work good. Once she does her Accession packet for the Army (Spring semester of junior year) she can apply for the Cyber Branch that the Army has."

The financial workup sheet he attached was in good detail and informative. In comparison to the reps from the other two institutions, this was seriously lacking and did not instill confidence.

Walman -- It is obvious this above email was typed in haste and is not very professional in construct.

I would recommend you contact the VMI Army ROTC Detachment Commander, or perhaps better, VMI Admissions, with any of your concerns. I think they would (or should) appreciate the feedback. Most of the time it is best for the incoming student to initiate contact, but since this is "finance" that you are going to pay and since the coice of school has not been made, it may be appropriate for you to make the contact since you aren't getting the answers to your legitimate questions. VMI is in competition for students and ROTC members with talent just like every other AROTC Detachment and University. VMI's Superintendent would not be very happy as the correspondence you received does not match VMI standards.

I would be hesitant to paint VMI with a broad brush based in a single poorly composed email.

Agree with @Falcon A to provide constructive feedback to the superintendent.

Although he ultimately attended another university, VMI was stellar during my son's visit there three years ago.

I understand that VMI can't be judged by one email chain. Please understand that the gathering, collation, and interpretation of all this information takes time and a great deal of effort. Since you all have gone before us, I'm sure you understand. Repetitive time and effort causes frustration. I am certain VMI didn't get its stellar reputation practicing mediocrity. We did get a better response from the same individual but it was a copy/paste of a form letter. I am going to do a work around to a better source. This whole process has been an education in and of itself. Still have much to learn. Thanks.

Although poorly written the email seemed to convey useful content. Personally, I'd let it go.

For The Citadel, if the student is interested in cyber security, the college has a new degree program in Intelligence and Cyber Security. See:
http://www.my.citadel.edu/root/intelligence-and-security-studies-program

In addition to ROTC and academic scholarships, Cadets taking STEM (e.g. Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Health and Exercise Science, Mathematics, Nursing, and Physics), are eligible for School of Science and Mathematics grants from $2,500 to $10,000 depending on their academic credentials. There are also federal scholarship and internship opportunities available to high performing cadets planning careers in cyber security. See the college web site at:

Best of luck

For out of state tuition, after the 4 year AROTC scholarship, you will be responsible for the Room and Board and Quartermaster fees. The cost for Fall 2018-2019 year is $12,856. I spoke with the financial aid office yesterday.

My son applied for the AROTC Scholarship and didnt get one....but he really wanted to go to NMMI because of the 2+2 college (2 yrs NMMI commission as a 2nd LT then 2 yrs at Embry for flight school) everyone on this forum spoke poorly of the Jr College's I have to say my son loves NMMI, he tells me none stop it is the greatest place to be. And NMMI looks good on any resume due to the leadership, discipline and structure. Of course he is ROTC and contracted so he gets paid to go to school. And he is getting a 3 year ROTC scholarship and we dont have to go through the waiting and wondering and questions. NMMI gave my son numerous scholarships, helped me and answered every question I had. The staff has walked me through everything (other then leaving him there on day #1) The parents club is amazing. I can not say enough about NMMI. Good Luck!
