Just a simple question:

I've heard that Norwich typically gives students the largest-financial aid package per year. I'm curious for some insight, how does El Cid compare to this? Do they typically give out a generous amount of Financial Aid/Scholarships, or are they known as a school that doesn't give much aid at all?

Thanks again!

The Citadel is a public college and not overly generous with institutional merit aid as are private colleges. The citadel doesn’t try to meet most of a cadets financial need based aid requirements per the cadet’s family income. The College Board estimates that a majority of private colleges offer discounts to a majority of their students amounting to ~ 49% of their published prices. So if price is an issue and your credentials are not very good, you might search for private colleges to meet your need.

There are two types of financial aid - Need based and Merit based. Financial Need aid is based on your family income per the federal form you file. Merit is based on your credentials and the profile of cadets the college wants fo its incoming freshmen class. Most of the merit aid awarded at The Citadel is from federal sources - $14 million in ROTC scholarships, cyber security and other government agency scholarships for specific majors. In-state cadets are eligible for the state lottery scholarships that are based on merit. Academic scholarships are awarded based on your high school credentials and what you bring to the class. You have received prior info on the Scholars program awards - again based on your merit. Overall cadets at The Citadel received ~$34 million in direct financial aid last year.

So is there any rough estimate as to how much aid I would be able to receive, as a single-parent family home, with a income less than 30k?

So, do I understand correctly you are an academically accepted applicant, subject to completing your other entrance requirements? If so you should consult your assigned Admissions counselor about this type of detail - as well as The Citadel Financial Aid Office - that is why they are available. You can get an estimate of your net cost after available need based financial aid by using this Net Price Calculator found on The Citadel website:

Our son applied to Norwich and intended it as his plan B with NROTC. Norwich was very generous and offered him $36,000 in merit based annual aid. That was two years ago. They were also very available for him to communicate with and very timely in their responses. I even recall a call from a cell phone on a Sunday answering a question he had emailed.

The Net Price Calculator hasn't been updated since the 2016-2017 Academic Year, in which out of state tuition was like 45,000, now it's 53,000, so I can't really rely on that

I will check with The Citadel’s Financial Aid Director on the net price calculator, it definitely should be current as both in-state and out-of-stathe, tuition, R&B, and order fees were set in the spring. FYI, out-of-state tuition is not $53,000. It is $36,396. In any case, I once again encourage you to be asking these specific questions that are personal to you to the Admissions Counselor assigned to you, and the Financial Aid Office. They are the only ones who can give you answers. Have you filled out the FASBA form that is necessary to determine your family financial contribution? See: https://www.citadel.edu/root/finaid

My EFC is 000765

Out of state, planning to attend from Indiana, as long as I can figure out tuition
Last year, the Citadel offered around 7K to offset room and board for my son. He was a 4 year Army ROTC winner. I believe the funds were offered to a limited pool of potential incoming members of the class if 2025.
Have you check North Georgia? The most affordable SMC in the Country. They waive out of state tuition and room/board was not too bad. That was plan C for my son if he did not win a ROTC scholarship.
UNG is in the South and affordable, may not be as rigid as Norwich/VMI/Citadel but why go into debt or pay big money for "the system".
There are several Youtube videos from current cadets floating around to give you an idea of the school.

Thank you, but I've already taken my oath and I've enlisted with the Marine Corp. I have my ship-date for August 29, 2022. I am now beginning to prepare, I have a 4-year AD contract, then after that I plan to do OCS, or even reapply to a Service Academy, or potentially another SMC going in as prior enlisted.

Ultimate goal being to commission as an officer in the Marine Corp
