We are coming down from Connecticut to see our DS,( rat) game weekend..... If we plan to park on the parade ground, is it advisable to get there right at 7:00am to be able to get a spot ..... Since we are coming so far in a sedan we can't bring much more tailgating gear then chairs ..... This is a new experience for us and could use some advice as to how best to plan given our logistics ..... Thanks

My experience which is now a few years old is that folks will start lining up to park pretty close to 0700 in order to get good spots for Tailgating-but it's not like going to an SEC game- you won't be jousting for position if you are there a little later. Getting on to the post to park though is time constrained- the traffic pattern turning off Rt 11 into VMI gets really clogged so a lot early is better than waiting till after parade. You can always park the car, walk up town to one of the Coffee shops for gnoshes and kill time till the Parade which should be around 10am.
As far as Tailgating- we were always in the same shape you are- driving down from Boston- didn't really have an interest in hauling a grill, food a tent, chairs etc... Bring what you can and don't sweat it- stop by Walmart in Lexington and get a couple of thermoses of coffee/ Hot Chocolate, a styrofoam cooler for some ice & Drinks and a couple folding chairs and you are in business in the tailgating world! If things have stayed the same- I think that at least the Army will have a tailgating tent out there and many of your son's Brother Rats will probably have parents tailgating out there with some pretty elaborate rigs, so I wouldn't worry about the tailgating.

Have a good time and GO Keydets!!

Hard core arrives at 5am, but you can park off the parade ground

I think the Citadel game is a big deal for both teams and many will be there, especially Alumni.

Rats will be able to join you before and after the parade. Then they march to the Stadium. They sit together for the 1st half and then can join you in the stands and march back to barracks. They can join you after signing out. You may want to make reservations for dinner now.

I am a Rat parent as well - Hotel Company

I would second that- there are a lot of places to eat around VMI but other than Macado's if you are happy with Sandwiches- the rest will be pretty crowded at Dinner time. A suggestion for chow after the winning football game (note I am carefully refraining from saying who I predict to be on the winning side:rolleyes:)- try heading about 20 miles north of Lexington to the Edelweiss Restaurant (if you like German food and beer at a reasonable price). It's off I-81 at exit 213 just south of Staunton- you can usually get a reservation and not all of your dining companions will be Cadets which your Cadet will appreciate. BTW- it is considered de rigueur for visiting parents to bring some of your Rat's sad/ hungry looking BrotherRats with you to dinner:wink:

GO KEYDETS!!
