Hi, I was hoping someone could shed some light on the Citadel Scholar's program for me. I was accepted to the Citadel, and recently received a letter inviting me to visit in November for the program. I understand that this is a competition for a full scholarship. My main question is how many people are invited/how many actually receive a scholarship? I have an itinerary for it, but if someone here has actually gone to it, could you explain what happens? I don't need to know all the basics of the Citadel, my brother is an Alumni, but I don't know that much so I appreciate all help!
Thanks!

Last year, approximately 160 candidates were invited for a visit and 95 candidates were interviewed. The committee recommended that 32 full scholarships and 60 partial scholarships be offered. There are three scholar's visits per year, the first being in November, and the other two in January and March.

As for the trip, its more or less like any other pre-knob visit, except that everyone on it is competing for the scholarship. You'll arrive on a Thursday afternoon, and go to a number of meetings and attend dinner with the knob you'll be shadowing. You'll then have a meeting with ROTC representatives, and then go back to your respective barracks, where you'll have time to ask your knob and their roommate questions. In the morning, you'll attend sweep detail, breakfast, morning classes, and lunch. On Friday afternoon you'll discuss your essay with a professor and a few other candidates. The scholarship committee will consider the comments of that professor, your admissions information, and the comments of Dr. Rhodes, if you chose to interview for the Honors Program while you visited.

I would highly recommend the Honors Program. It really helps give you that edge, academically while at The Citadel and professionally after graduation.

Hmm interesting. So I do shadow a knob, I was wondering if it would be a knob or upperclassman for this program. Do we do any PT with the knobs or anything, or is it strictly observance? Also, for the honors program, what all do I receive if I entered that? Is it just honors classes, or are you put into some companies based on your enrollment in the program?

Company assignment is random, unless you choose to join Band company or have family that are alumni, which case you'll likely be placed in that company.

You won't PT with knobs, just observe their day-to-day routine. You'll be shadowing a knob rather than an upperclassmen so that you get a better understanding of the fourth class system. You'll have the opportunity to talk to upperclassmen as well.

The honors program consists of taking a number of honors classes in lieu of regular classes, upper-division honors electives or independent study courses, and one-on-one personal/professional development courses as an upperclassman with Dr. Rhodes, the program director. More information is available on the honors program website

Thanks a lot for the help, you've answered any questions I've had about the program.

Scholars... still waiting

My Ds received an email stating that a letter with his pin number was sent out on March 30. It even says this on the website in financial aid... that pins were mailed out on March 30 for all. Once received you are to take that pin, along with your Citadel Wide ID and access your award on Banner Web. My Ds attended Citadel Scholars on March 4. Can't hardly wait...or breath.. too exciting but scary. So he knows he received something, but what remains to be seen.

Do you mind if I ask how you heard??.. did you hear in this process that I mentioned in an earlier thread about the email, letter with PIN and signing onto banner web? Of course, we're hoping for the full scholarship - that's why traveled all that way and put so much effort into it. He loved the whole competition and we believe he did fantastic - judging by what he said went on in the room. However, I have read that in other threads and posts people won as little as 5,000. So while you mentioned everyone is awarded something - that amount is not quite what we were hoping for. ANYWAY, CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU - THAT IS A FANTASTIC ACHIEVEMENT!! WE ARE REALLY HAPPY FOR YOU!

Hey, 5 grand is better than zero. You will receive a letter stating whether or not you received a scholarship, and in what amount. You will further receive another letter informing you that your complete (as of now) financial aid package is available for viewing on BannerWeb. Be patient. It will come soon. I got mine on March 31, but that's of course because I live in South Carolina.

Anyone else know if they got the scholarship?

I got the full merit scholarship roughly in January, and I got accepted into the honor program recently. Anyone else accepted into those programs?
