Civil Prep

Historically, over 90% of the sponsored preps that attend MMI before going to West Point will graduate.

DS also MMI bound

DS was also offered Civil Prep and will be heading to MMI. He received his AOG scholarship notification last Friday and has been inundated with phone calls and mail from the West Point Civil Prep Schools. We were amazed how quickly the information came back. He chose MMI because of location, number of sponsored prepsters who attend, and success rate. Now we're trying to figure out the best time to notify Cadet Command and his civilian colleges that he will not be attending nor using his ROTC scholarship.

That was a weird feeling last year when the DS made the call to a great school that was his Plan B all along, and turn down the ROTC scholarship among other supplemental scholarships.

It was also very strange when all of the Prep school phone calls began. We did not understand the process and what that little brown envelope from AoG meant. After going through the rigors of the process with the SA's in general and knowing how selective they are; it's not very convincing to get a phone call and some guy you've never met is saying they can get your DS/ DD into West Point. It felt very shady at first.

Now, a year later, our DS has earned his appointment to WP. It is very satisfying to see him achieve a goal he we wanted so badly. He wanted it badly enough to turn down much more of a sure thing( with regard to getting his education, albeit not at a SA.)

His MALO and other friends we have who are West Point grads unanimously said it was still a fantastic opportunity to go the Prep route. I would have to say this year has been good for him, and would whole-heartedly agree.

There were 37 who started in my DS' AOG class at MMI. 3 did not receive offers to USMA. 32 of the remaining 34 are on track to graduate in 50 days. He turned down AROTC scholarships to three schools (public and private) to take the AOG offer, and yes, as a parent, it was hard to see. The beginning of this year was hard for him, i.e., knowing he would have graduated had he gone the ROTC route, but it has been worth it to him (although there has been grumbling along the way ). The AOG program has been good for him, it prepared him well for the first year and put him on the track for graduating from a service academy, something he has wanted since he was very young. As a result of WP Parents Club, we have become very good friends with the parents of those that were in the class of 2012 in when my DS was offered AOG. Guess what: those that did get in were great kids, accomplished in all areas and are now 2nd Lts. So the long and short of this rambling post is that AOG was a great opportunity and as many have said it means WP sees something in you. Good luck to those with the opportunity. Use it wisely.

Well congrats to you and your DS! We got the word Wednesday from his RC and are expecting the letter today or tomorrow! DS is leaning towards MMI as well and is getting more excited by the day. We really did not know much about civil prep till a few days ago but the information we have received in this forum has been extremely helpful in truly understanding how wonderful this opportunity is. Hope to meet you and your DS at MMI this summer! Part of me and my DS as well are still numb but so grateful for this opportunity. ?..

DS also received his letter last week offering the AoG civil prep. He did accept the offer and chose Marion. The school also has a 100% advancement rate to West point.

There seems to be a contradiction in facts.

In talking to the different CP schools, ask specific questions. This applies to those of you who are considering going unsponsored also.
There is a difference in success rates between sponsored and unsponsored.
Understand what they mean by 'success' rate.
For example - if 20 AOGs enter XYZ Prep but 1 became medically DQ'd and 1 did not pass the CFA - hence becoming DQ'd. Does the prep still consider that they have a 100% acceptance rate if the 18 got offers to WP ?
Make sure you understand the stats they are giving you.
All of the schools on the AOG list are good or they wouldn't be on the list.
It just depends what you want. Some prefer the one closet to home.

My understanding about the AOG scholarship is that unless you mess up at the CP, you will receive an appointment to WP for the next class.
You also must remain DoDMERB qualified and pass the CFA again.

Who gets these offers? The RCs generally get recommendations from FFRs. Each region is allotted X number of AOG spots. The RC choose who gets the spots in his region and AOG offers them the scholarship. That is probably an oversimplified explanation, but that is how I've been told it happens.

Congrats to all who receive an AOG scholarship. :thumb:
An appointment to the Class of 2018 really is yours to lose.

Our son, too, is beginning to get excited and starting to look forward to attending MMI. In fact, we are gonna drive down from Jersey and spend a weeks vaca down in the area...Pensacola, Mobile, Montogomery, or even Tennessee. Still up in the air. I was stationed in P'cola for years and would love to return for a visit.

Plus, we found out that report day is August 13th for this coming class.

I know your DS will have a great experience there. He'll develop bonds with the other WP kids that will last throughout the 47 months at WP. He will also be better prepared.

Good Luck

Tug,
Thanks for all of your advice and support throughout this process. This choice for him was simply a higher power. Personally, I believe going through this route will be so much more beneficial. As you said, the friendship and support he'll gain as he enters WP will be priceless. The group of AoG's will have a very strong bond as they enter together. Going from the couch to WP via a prep school is truly a blessing.

We saw that too. We'll be coming in on the 12th. Trying to figure out where to stay. We are a family of 5 boys, so we are trying to figure out where we should stay. There was mention of a dinner for those who were in town on the 12th. Received all info and paperwork these past two days....it's all real now!! :thumb:

RC let us know paperwork is on the way....will not seem real until DS opens the envelope! Looks like he will choose MMI as well so hopefully we will all get to meet on the 12th! Congrats all....

The dinner was a fun opportunity to get to know everyone. If you are planning on attending and get to Marion early, I know that one of the AoG's went ahead and got some paperwork done for MMI early last year and it saved him some time from waiting in lines the next day. :thumb:

Congratulations

Congratulations!!!! It is overwhelming, but an amazing opportunity!! I am excited that a wonderful community is already forming!! :thumb:

DS's paperwork came in today! Looks like he is headed to MMI! Best of luck to all who are waiting news...

Geppymom....we are staying at B&B. Though I hear the Sleep Inn is very close and is priced the best. However, I think you have to call now. Talking with the school, the hotel will fill up fast. Most of the school has to report on the 12th, but the prep kids show up on the 13th.

Are you coming in on the 11th or 12th?

We are going to come in on the 12th. DS received email from LTC Bauer trying to coordinate meeting for us. He said there are 20 AOGs at this point!
