Little confused. My DS was offered Civil Prep Program via the AOG but has not received notice of QNA or we have not received TWE. He's still on the NWL and nobody can really tell us whats going on. Not sure what we should think at this point?!?! any thoughts . Is the Civil Prep Program a good thing?

Good Morning Sir/Ma'am,

The Civil Prep Program is generally offered to candidates who are qualified in every arena, but just might have a small chance of getting in that year for a variety of reasons (such as their district is very competitive), so West Point offers an Association of Graduates scholarship for the candidate to choose a military junior college for one year. I was one of these candidates last year, and I never received an actual TWE from West Point.
I think Civil Prep is a wonderful thing. I went to Marion Military Institute in Marion, Alabama last year. It was a year for me to mature, make friends, be independent, focus on my studies, and get ready for a West Point environment. I took essentially the same classes at Marion that I am currently taking as a USMA plebe, and it has helped me tremendously.
I think a lot of kids/parents are initially disappointed when they receive news of Civil Prep because this simply means another year without an appointment. However, in hindsight, I don't know a single person who regrets their year at CP.
I never think less of kids who didn't get in to West Point on the first try. I passed the CFA/APFT, had a 34/35 ACT, lots of leadership, and a decent GPA. I still think I needed prep. It made the transition a lot easier.

I am currently a plebe at USMA. Please let me know if you have any specific questions about USMA or Civil Prep. Good luck to your son!

My DD did civil prep without a scholarship after TWE. She is now a plebe at USMA. It was a great year for her and helped her achieve her goal of an appointment. If you have a AOG scholarship it is the golden ticket. A year to grow and mature and a almost guaranteed place in next years class. The program my DD went to was NWP (northwestern preparatory school) in Southern California. A great program! Give the Durbeck’s a call they will love hearing from you!

2018 went AOG civil prep through MMI. Outstanding program...will prepare candidates for the military, academic and physical demands of plebe year at USMA. 100% of all civil prep candidates from all service academies attending MMI received appointments.

I can't stress enough how well the year at MMI prepared my 2018 for life at the academy.

Classmates of his at MMI have become lifelong friends.

I would not stress over QNS or the TWE as your DS now has a slot reserved in the next class if he opts for civil prep.

Congratulations to your DS. Now sit back and enjoy the ride!

DO you apply for it?

I know this is an older post but my son will be attending NWP this fall as a self prepper. What did your daughter do for spring semester? Any tips?

So excited for you and your son. NWP is such a great program, they will make lifelong friends and have opportunities unfold for them. My daughter went to our local university and lived at home. We are lucky to have two great university's in our small community. Other options she looked at were living with one of her 3 older sisters in various states. Really happy she came home and I got to spend that time with her before heading to an academy! She took classes that would mimic a typical plebe schedule and I believe that really helped her with that 1st semesters rigorous schedule. One thing that is hard is some of the smaller colleges don't offer all the classes in the spring semester so it came in handy that she had taken some college classes at that same university while in high school. For example: Chemistry 1, the school may only offer that in the fall, so having taken it during high school as an AP or College Class would come in handy so they could take Chemistry 2. Just some questions that come up when enrolling in those spring semester classes. Feel free to send me a message if you have any other questions.
