  • U.S. cadets hail from 39 states with nine coming from Germany, Puerto Rico, Japan, South Korea, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

  • Additionally, there are four international cadets who are sponsored by the United Arab Emirates, Marshall Islands, Romania, and Antigua. These will be the first representatives of the UAE, Romania and Marshall Islands to join the Corps of Cadets.

  • 74% of the Class intends to major in engineering, math or science.

  • 30% are female and 18% are from underrepresented racial groups.

  • Over 50% come from families whose immediate members are in or were in a branch of the U.S. military.

  • Overall, the SAT average for the class is 1275 (critical reading and math).

  • 3345 students submitted an application; 341 were offered appointments and 275 indviduals will swear-in on R-Day.

  • 2804 students submitted an application; 380 were offered appointments
    and 294 individuals will swear-in on R-Day.
 
Two things I find interesting. 1) Why the dip in submitted applications? 3345 last year to 2804 this year, a 500 application (16%) dip seems odd to me. 2) I notice the increase in class size and offered appointments. Is this a normal fluctuation or odd as well?
 
The class size "issue" is fairly normal. My class started with over 300, ended up with I think 205. Some classes are under 300, some are over.

The application submition number is interesting though.
 
I was told that the CG is looking for around 185-195 new officers from the academy every year. A few years ago, when the graduation rate was lower, they would routinely have incoming class sizes over 300 (knowing what the estimated drop-out rate was going to be) to get to that target number.

When the graduation rates started climbing, they adjusted the class size a little lower (270-280), as some class years were sending out 210-220 new officers to the fleet.

Either they are anticipating a higher drop-out rate from the Class of 2012, or they will be needing more than 200 new officers 4 years from now.

In spite of the numbers, they have certainly amassed the finest group of young men and women out there for the class of 2012. The more I talk to, read, and see online, I am amazed at the stellar achievements of the appointees chosen. These future CG officers are at the top of their class, outstanding scholars, athletes and well-rounded, grounded just really good kids.
I went to the Chesapeake/Potomac area chapter parents/appointees picnic a few weeks ago and talked with a few parents and found out what schools these kids turned down to accept their USCGA appointments. (Mind you, we're not new to the college process, having gone thru it last year with out oldest daughter)But a lot of these young men and women had been accepted to Ivy League schools and/or had full-scholarships to other top-notch colleges. It goes without saying of course, admissions knows what they're looking for, but to see the caliber of students going to a service academy is inspiring.
These young men and women make me so proud to be an American, a parent, and a part of today's future military. Way to go and all the best to the Class of 2012!
