Class of 2015 LOA's Received

Huffton,

Are you saying that you already heard back from all of your nomination sources that you applied to, and each one of them declined to nominate you? That doesn't make any sense if you have an LOA. I know that for some LOA's who don't get nominated the Commandant can give you a nomination. It is like Aglages said, "there are some discretionary Noms."

I'm basing my LOA information off of what I heard from my regional counselor, liaison officer, and friends who are already or who have already been cadets at a SA.

one of my clients - her son had an LOA but did not get a nomination and also did not get an appointment. so it can happen.

supergirl, that's an odd case. Perhaps he did not meet the conditional requirements or maybe there is something else that went on behind the scenes. It is truly rare since the MOC's are notified of the LOA picks in their area usually pick them due to the fact that an LOA doesn't need a principal nomination and the fact that an LOA'r doesn't take away from the five cadets a MOC is allowed to have at an SA at one time. I'm suspicious of this woman's son--not saying it didn't happen but that there are other factors involved that haven't been revealed.

I am aware of many instances where an LOA did not get an appointment. The typical reason is that the LOA recipient did not apply for all noms for which they are eligible. It is a complex system and it has been discussed in detail many times on this forum over the last few years. You can do a search a find some posts that explain it in some detail.

As to the LOA not being charged to the MOC, that is not entirely accurate. An LOA recipient MAY not be charged to a MOC. It is not a foregone conclusion that the LOA recipient will not be charged. That is a common misunderstanding. Just because a MOC has an LOA recipient, that does not mean that the MOC district will have two appointees. If the MOC submits a competitive slate (most do) the highest WCS will get the appointment and be charged to the MOC, regardless of LOA. An LOA recipient often has the highest WCS and is frequently charged to the MOC. If the MOC submitted a ranked slate, and put the LOA at the bottom, the #1 ranked person will bet the appointment and be charged to the MOC while the LOA recipient will also get an appointment but will not be charged to that MOC. Many MOCs do not fully understand the system and may choose to place an LOA recipient in the #1 spot, resulting in the charge the LOA against that MOC. It can become very complicated and there are numerous nuances that are frequently misunderstood.

All that said, bottom line, if a candidate receives an LOA and also applies for appropriate noms but does not get a nom, they are virtually assured an appointment. However, if the same candidate got an LOA and decided not to finish the MOC applications and did not try to get a MOC nom, I have seen these individuals not receive an appointment. An LOA is not a guarantee of appointment. Nonetheless, the vast majority of LOA recipients do in fact receive appointments. But, there are those few that do not. Other examples I have seen include trouble with the law (senior prank gone bad is an example that comes to mind from last year, and the prior year as well).

Good luck to everyone. MOC noms are not due at the SA until 1/31/11. While some MOCs have already turned in their slate, the majority wait until the end of January.

You are right 2011's Mom. It just seems weird to me that there are people who would not apply for a nomination at every source possible. For the entire USAFA application process I have been able to recycle my essays (for the AFA application, senator applications, and congressman application) so applying for a nomination took no time at all. Thanks for all the sobering information though on how a virtual appointment could go drastically awry! :director: :rocket: :guns4:  :stretcher:

I agree that it seems "weird" but evidently it is not uncommon. At my son's nomination interview with our Congressperson, over half the candidates that we talked to had not applied for noms to either Senator or the VP. Many evidently did not have the advantages of involved parents advising them and the good fortune of having discovered this site for excellent advice. :thumb:

What is a LOA?
Letter Of Assurance.
It is a letter from a service academy "assuring" a candidate that they want him/her and that they are "virtually" assured an appointment if they get a nomination.

A very good friend of our family is in a similiar predicament. She applied for all nom sources available to her, including VP, back in September, recvd LOA to USAFA in late October. She has heard back from all MOC sources, recvd 2 NOMS to USNA, but none to USAFA. When she originally submitted nom apps USNA was #1 choice, but she tried to make it clear in interviews that she was seeking a nom to each academy but if she could only rcv one Academy it would be USAFA because of the LOA...guess they didn't get that, so now she has 2 noms to USNA and none to USAFA, despite the LOA. Needless to say, she is on pins and needles and is holding out for the long shot of the VP nom!

Sooo, bottom line, it is possible for a highly qualified candidate with an LOA to not rcv a moc nom to that particular academy.

BTW, any advice from ALO's or others that might help her out would be greatly appreciated, feel free to pm me!
Thanks!

I remember on 11/20, sitting in my car waiting for DS to come out of Congressman Lee's interview, I was a wreck! DS was not LOL. His interview was at noon. While sitting in my car I watched student after student go in for their SA interview.
Nice to meet you!!!! Best wishes to your DS!!!!!! No BFE here either. The application has not been updated either with the nomination yet.
