Couldn't agree with you more. Our DS was a Falcon Scholar at NWP and he fully admits it has prepared and further motivated him to attend the USAFA. My wife and I race each other for the mailbox almost every day...The only thing that gives us comfort at this juncture is that letter the Falcon Scholars received from the Director of Admissions stating her intent to recommend to the board an appointment. We still can't rest until that BFE arrives!

Another source of intelligence is the Academy Admissions Facebook page (US Air force Academy (Admissions)). Last year they said when they were sending out letters of appointments. This year they have mentioned that LEAD candidates should know around March 1st. Hopefully they'll start sending out BFEs shortly afterwards. I would caution you against going by previous years. This year is different.
As a recovering mailbox stalker, I encourage you all to post your frustrations, joys and sorrows. It was a lifesaver last year (Thanks FalconFamily).

"....the process for appointments is (being) conducted a little different(ly) this year due to the limited number of slots (available). Highly qualified individuals may find out sooner than most, but the majority of students will find out after March 1st. However, as is normal, students can receive an appointment all the way up to just prior to the start date of Basic Cadet Training, which is June 28th." (edited for clarity)

BFE has Arrived!!!!!!!
DS status page updated to "Appointment offered" on Sunday morning. This was his first notification. BFE was in the mailbox yesterday afternoon. Letter inside is dated 2/7/11. He filled out his acceptance last night and it is going into the mail today. Super excited!!!!!

Hang in there. Its a wild ride. You know we're proud of all the candidates. Whether its USAFA or ROTC, our country is going to be in great hands with all of the quality kids applying. Good luck to you and your DS!

I try all day to block the impending news. I get riled up every time I go to the mailbox though. I'd be better off just KNOWING - even if it's a NO... the suspense is very stressful.
I haven't been much of a poster in here - but does anyone know if the Academy takes into consideration "special awards" - like one of a kind awards a person may have? He's got great SAT's, above average GPA, an OK class rank (our school is a BUNCH of over achievers), Varsity sports, community service, Eagle Scout, etc etc etc. But I know in this pool of candidates it is the BEST OF THE BEST being "good/great" may not cut it.

Number of appointments offered?
Congrats to everyone with an appointment! Hang in there everyone else, most of us are in the same boat. However, I know that all of the appointments offered are not on this site so that gets me wondering how many of the total appointments have been offered now. What do you guys think? 3%? 5%? More? Less?

my guess is they have sent out about 200. But then my crystal ball is cracked...

Yes. They award points for Scouts, Boys State, and for different community service. The way they do that is not publically known. Since no one on these forums is on the selection committee, not sure if you can get much more information.
