Class of 2016-Mailbox Stalkers Club

Jumping in to admit... I too am a mailbox stalker! I'm trying not to wish this precious time with DS away, but can't wait to find out if he will be appointed or not. He has dreamed of going to the USAFA since he was eight years old. He has done all he could do to get accepted. Now...we wait!

Thanks for creating this thread and for all of the helpful comments posted here. It's comforting to have an online community for support! Prayers to you all!
Welcome ZoomieMommy! thanks for joining in. We appreciate your prayers and add you to ours. All the Best to you and your DS!

And thanks to everyone who has shared their expertise and knowledge with us. We all appreciate it very much.

Seriously y'all - I appreciate the emotional support this forum gives me.

I have gone from being excited to check the mail - to being absolutely petrified of the TWE.

You are not alone!

Hang in there! you aren't the only one who is going through this. Remember that the TWE is sometimes followed up by another one (Prep or Falcon), and there is always next year. Not much consolation, I expect, just know that you aren't alone. Together, we can make it through this without being sent to the loony bin (I hope ).

The Prep and Falcon letters I was referring to above would be the "new" appointments to AFA Prep or Falcon Scholarship recipients. I was not referring to current Preppies. It is my understanding that the majority of Preppies will receive appointments. If you are a current Preppie, please post and let us know when you get your BFE.

Still just a-waiting. Though all 3 of the sponsored West Point preps here got their appointments this past week. Hopefully ours are coming soon! Until then, Mail Slot stalking in Roswell! :thumb:

I am no expert, to say the least, but it seems to me that the USMA is on a different schedule than the AFA. I feel like I have seen several AFA hopefuls on here that have already received appointments from USMA. If I am wrong, please don't hesitate to correct me.

Hang in there! I think it will be a long, interesting, nerve-wracking ride.

USAFA is on a different schedule with their cuts this year. We Falcons were told we probably wouldn't hear anything until at least mid-late March. Our Navy preps here will probably know before us as well. I guess USMMA sends their sponsored kids appointments wayyy later, like April or May. To be honest, the suspense is awful, but still just waiting... marching helps take your mind of the waiting though! :thumb:

Yeah, Actually, both academies seem to have offered many appointments already. I received a USMA appointment back around the 20th of January. If you check the appointment lists, you can see that many others have gotten theirs as well from USMA and USNA.

The waiting continues

How many appointments do you think have been sent out? I know that we have less than 20 here on the forum. But we also need to take in account that not everyone who has gotten a BFE is part of the forum.

last year, the number of appointments reported on this forum (127?) was only about 11% of the slots available. Keep in mind that the number of appointments exceeded the number of slots available, although I have no real sense of that that ratio was. If you assume that 20% more appointments were offered than were accepted, you have 1380 appointments, then only about 9% of the appointments were reported on this forum.

Take the average (10%) times the number reported on this forum so far (15) and you have appx. 150 appointments having been made so far, all together.

I know I will be accused of using some fuzzy math by some, and overall fuzzy thinking by everyone else, but I don't know any other way to estimate it, short of having an inside connection at the Academy, which, of course, is highly unlikely.

The recruited athletes have most likely all received appointments and the rest are the most highly qualified, exceptional applicants.

If my math is correct, that still leaves about 900 appointments yet to be offered. If I had to guess I would say expect about 3 waves of 300 offers being made in March and April (2 in March and 1 the first week of April). There will be some percentage of those offers that are not accepted, and those additional offers will go out in April and May. I really think this year that they will go right down to the wire (end of June) before they are finished.

Once again, it will be a long wait.........

Here is what this year's BFEs look like for anyone interested:

This particular BFE was received by a NWP Falcon who is also a bluechip athlete.

Karek - Thanks but my DS has not yet received his BFE. The picture I posted was from another Falcon who is also a recruited athlete which is why I believe he received his at this early date.

We're also in a holding pattern IRT to the Academy, but the kid is very busy in his final selection of Plan B. He's flying out to Norwich tomorrow to go to an abbreviated version of SS (Only without the summer - Brrrrr ) and he'll have to make the choice between AU and NU sometime in April if he gets the TWE. Still, no news is GOOD news sometimes! :shake:

Best

Welcome to the "club" ZoomieMommy! I have reached the point that I don't WANT to go to the mailbox!

I also find it interesting that so many of these wonderful kids have been dreaming the same dream since they were eight years old. My DS was eight when he began working toward USAFA as well. He was always fascinated with airplanes/flight in general from the time he first began speaking, but says that September 11, 2001 was the day he knew he wanted to be a pilot in the USAF.

Until we get some sort of envelope.........hang in there!

My emotions have run the gamut from being convinced my son would get in to being convinced he wouldn't. He, on the other hand, is quite certain he'll have a positive outcome. I wish I had 1/10 of that kids confidence. I just want to put it all to bed...in or not. The not knowing is driving me insane!

Same thing for my DS. He says 9/11 strongly influenced his decision to pursue this path. Shortly after 9/11, he joined the scouts, then AFJROTC in 9th grade. He has also been fascinated with flight since he started walking and talking. His father and I have always been infatuated with Sci Fi films like Star Wars, Star Trek, Stargate, etc and that's what our DS grew up watching. My dad was a USAF navigator and he taught me about the stars when I was little and I dreamed of being a pilot and sadly, didn't pursue it. I would show our son the stars my dad taught me and talk about how I didn't follow my dream. I'm thinking, maybe, some of that rubbed off on him.

Ten+ years is a long time to dream of and strive for something and so many of these candidates have done just that. And we as parents have dreamed it right along with them, as well as encouraged and supported them to this point. We as parents on this forum, certainly share a lot of the same experiences and emotions. My son has asked me to not talk about it right now. He says, for him, talking about it makes the waiting worse, so instead I have turned to this forum. Reading these posts has given me a much needed outlet. Thank you everyone for sharing.
