Class of 2019 Appointment Thread

Congrats to your DS. Does he have a LOA? Otherwise, EA and a nomination are apparently no guarantee of an appointment at all from all the threads I've seen on here. Obviously his chances are drastically improved though.

My DS is one step closer. He received a nomination today from Senator Harkin! :thumb:

HSMadi - Congratulations to your DS on the news today! Did he find out via a phone call, email or letter on the Principal nomination from McCain?

Received phone call today about principal nomination to USMA. However, on USAFA portal there was one from Trent Franks and John McCain including Appointment status. We realized he got double nominated to both academies and will receive two appointments. He is now very struck on which to choose, as flying is not his concern. Any input here? USAFA vs USMA?

What are his career interests? Has he been to both Academies for a visit? I presume you are from Arizona. Colorado is a lot closer for visits! My DS was dead set on one SA over the other and after visiting both of them, changed his priority based on the "feeling" he had during the visits.

This is a great problem to have. Really he should focus on both the four year experience and how it impacts the rest of his life, in the military and post-military.

Congratulations and good luck!

He was flown to USAFA for DVP but never visited USMA. Financially we won't be able to fly him down there to see it. However, he is interested in a science career with focus on biology or chemistry. As a specific career he is not sure but knows he wants to pursue something such as medicine but knows that is difficult in the academies and is open to many science careers.

Also he wishes to make this a career and stay in past the service commitment.

Find a way to get him to West Point. Ask for help, big decision, he cannot make the decision blind. Quick 48 hour trip.

The wating is killing us!!

T, my son, received his nomination last week from Sen. Durbin. We took our visit over the weekend and it just further affirmed that this is where he wants to be. He's 1/393 in his HS class, 4.0 gpa, Class President, hold a state level StuCo position, National Honor Society, Illinois State Scholar, and a 31 on his ACT. Somebody help talk me off the ledge here because we haven't heard any thing and his packet was completed early October. Is no LOA a killer?

TsDad,
Man I remember that ledge last year. LOL

Congrats on the NOM from Durbin. My son did not make the senator's cut last year (got Congressional instead). Not having an LOA is not a killer at all. Very few are given out. Odds are the wait will continue to kill you. I suggest pottery, crochet, skeet shooting or some other hobby to keep yourself distracted for the next few months. At this point, he has done all he can do and all that is left is waiting to see how it all shakes out. Best of luck!

Funny how much things change in a year. This time last year DD had her LOA and was waiting on the nomination. Waiting was hard, but don't wish away their senior year. Its over before you know it and they are gone too quickly. Now I sit here hoping and praying her finals are going well and counting the minutes until she is home for Christmas. One more tip for those with accepted appointments, make your hotel reservations for Parent's Weekend now! And for Acceptance day if you can manage it. Good luck to those still waiting and Congrats to those appointed.

Not having an LOA is NOT a killer... Most do not get them. We are from Illinois and my son did not get an LOA last year. He had his packet completed in October as well. He was offered an appointment during regular decision in the middle of March.

Tell your son to enjoy the rest of his senior year and keep up his grades. Hopefully he will get good news before it is all said and done!

Does anyone know if the Air Force sends out a formal appointment folder later? My DS has the appointment letter sent in the mail but for senior day he is going to be recognized and I wanted something a little more formal like a padded folder with the Air Force Academy seal etc.? Any ideas or should I just buy a frame for the appointment letter he received?

My DD first received notification her her appointment via an email telling her to check her portal. The portal reflected her appointment. A few days later she received a "TWE" in the mail (interesting) with the formalized appointment. It was on a nice, quality piece of brownish parchment type paper which was nice, but no BFE. I believe "Insider" posted something recently saying no more BFE's but that the ALO would receive something worth presenting to the appointee at a school recognition ceremony. Hope this helps.
