Class of 2019 Appointment Thread

Pretty certain of the Bachus info as my son received his appointment from Bachus office Jan. 30 and we have had a bit of contact with them. It's possible we misunderstood their nomination situation. If not, this is a likely scenario...Bachus (along with every other congressman) has 5 appointees at each academy at any given time. Last year he had more slots available than he chose to fill--so instead of having 5 appointees at WP in 2014-2015, he had, say 4. This year, he will likely have two graduates in 2015 or someone who separated for some reason, which freed up 2 slots. So, these 2 slots with the extra slot he didn't use last year, he had three. I'm guessing he chose to use all of his slots since he is retiring (conjecture on this point).

My understanding of the slate is this: Bachus submits up to 10 names on his WP slate and his slots are filled from this slate. Bachus doesn't do a Principle nom, so WP has discretion in choosing which of the 3 nominees from the slate to offer appointment. Also, there could be some offered appointment but who choose another college. Those appointments move to someone else from Bachus' list. Once Bachus' 3 slots are filled, the remaining persons on his list move to the NWL and may be chosen from that list.

So, when you say he could be a primary from one of those slates, I'm confused...again, not doubting what you're saying as I may misunderstand...I'm understanding one slate for all of Bachus' nominees.

Nonetheless, I think the point being made is some folks here thought the CC was being disrespectful of the process and the honor that it is to have received an appointment.

Interesting how we all read posts differently. I felt Curahee was expressing hope to applicants with tongue in cheek humor by listing his slip ups in the process and his weaknesses. I can see how it possibly didn't come off that way...but I always give posters the benefit of the doubt. I do not think it was meant to be disrespectful.

The nomination process is complicated and confusing. You have a good grasp of it except for how Bachus nominated for the 3 slots.
For each slot, he can nominate 10 candidates. In other words, if he wanted to, he could have nominated 30 candidates - 10 for each of his 3 slots. Each list of 10 is called a slate. If he turned in 3 slates, he would have 3 slot winners. What Bachus does is called a Competitive slate where the candidate with the highest Whole Candidate Score on each slate will be offered the appointment, if fully qualified. Therfore, if Bachus had 3 slots, he could have 3 candidates be the slot winners.
Your son won one slate. If Bachus had 1 or 2 more slates, then Curahee could have been the winner of one of the other slates.
Technically, you are the Primary on a slate if the MOC submits a Primary Nomination slate vs a Competitive Nomination slate.

I by no means meant disrespect or meant to belittle anyone's achievements. I was simply trying to add some humor to my situation - I was at a point that was fairly certain I was not getting in due to the competitiveness of my region. I was not saying I did last minute things or take a lackadaisical approach to this - I have been trying to get in this since middle school, and I feel like I have tried hard. I was just trying to give example of how you should never give up hope, no matter what you think is going to happen. I suppose I have a humor style that needs to be checked at the door. Again, I did not mean to be rude or disrespectful. My apologies.

As for the Bachus Nomination, I honestly have no idea what happened. I am pretty sure that some one took an appointment to USNA or USAFA and I lucked out. But that is all conjecture. I understand that it is an honor to have Bachus's last round of nominations and I do not want to seem that I think the process is trivial at all.

Again, I did not mean to be rude or disrespectful. I did not mean to sound like I was bragging. Either way, I will be put in my place come June 28th.
Now I feel like a jerk.

Ah, now see? That's what we frequent posters like to see...a little humility, a little mea culpa. You are going to do just fine at West Point and will do the Rebels proud. Give coach Anderson my best

Thanks for the clarification...very respectable and I wish you the best of luck. I'm sure you and my DS will get to know one another soon.

Curahee, I read your post as intended. Please do not check your sense of humor at the door. Many times during beast and your 4 years you will need to poke fun at yourself and situations that seem futile. The ability to do that will serve you well. Congrats and best of luck.

If you don't mind me asking, which High School does your DS go to? I remember hearing that someone from Hoover got in, and somebody from another local High School I can't recall the name of. Give them my congrats as a fellow AL-06, and I look forward to meeting them!

Curahee, I read your post as intended.

I'm glad someone didn't think I was a disrespectful jerk right off the bat:)! I will keep your advice in mind...I hear CBT is a lot more psychological than physical (emphasis on "a lot").

I just remembered why I stopped reading these forums. People are so quick to criticize and attack. Curahee, I found nothing disrespectful in your comments, and your humor refreshing. It is great to recognize your areas for improvement...On RDay everyone is equal regardless of their qualifications or how/when they received their Nominations and Appointments. Our DD, (Navy 2018) has told her brother (West Point 2019), not to lose his sense of humor, it will get him through the first year!

Thanks! To my dismay, he hasn't accept it yet, as he might be considering going to Plan B school with a number of his friends. Talk about roller coaster rides!

Yup, my DS did the same to us but did end up accepting. Best of luck & I'm sure it will work out for the best!
