During Plebe Summer 2016 (class of 20's PS), we had a some discussion about attrition. From my, um, research, it looks right now like they class of 2020 has lost about 80 Mids since I-Day. That's about 2.5% attrition heading into Spring Semester 2018.

That is incredibly low. We lost that in Plebe Summer alone and probably more.

Maybe I am reading this incorrectly, but if the class of 2020 has lost 80 mids out of 1184 who entered on I-Day, that is like 6.8% attrition rate.

You can have your MID tell you their Class ranking. Compare the current class number to the published number in Class Profile. Maybe not exact, but puts you very close to the numbers lost.

Overall attrition (4yrs) is now approaching 10%. Most are those for whom It just wasn’t the right fit.

10%, that's good. Used to be around 15% if I recall correctly. I suspect NASS, CVW's, Social Media have had an impact. Individuals have a better idea going in than the old days. Better HS academics and large applicant pools. Of course, so I don't offend the old grads on here, I must state the Academy is a much friendlier place today than it was back in the day when Midshipmen marched in formation from class to class in the snow.

The OGs don’t get offended about attrition. Well maybe some of us do. The only one I get salty about are the honor offenses almost always being given a second chance. Things haven’t changed all that much, it is more friendly in some ways and tougher in others. The physical standards are the same. Academics are nearly the same with the exception of Cyber courses being added. Conduct appears to be the same. But yes it is friendlier in terms of weekends (even for Plebes) and privileges. That definitely helps with making the grind better. As Plebes we earned 1 weekend the entire year. As youngsters we had 3 (1 Long and 2 short).

More BGOs, CVWs, NASS spots and social media definitely helps this number. NASS probably has 3-4 times the amount of candidates as we did. CVWs are much bigger. BGO program is bigger. With all the forums and social media, it would be hard for a candidate to not have some idea. Probably 50% of my class arrived on I Day and had never stepped foot on USNA.
