Class of 2020 USNA Appointment Thread

Upon deep reflection, it was clear that when I posted here yesterday, I did come off as a know-it-all smugster or a horses-***.

I sincerely apologize to the Board and to NavyHoops in particular, for my insensitive behavior.

I truly meant no harm with my analysis; I was only trying to lay out some thoughts. Message delivery has never been one of my better talents.

I truly do understand the feeling of receiving a TWE and perhaps the years since getting that letter have dulled within me the ability to reflect upon what it will be like in this day and age to get one.
Years ago, I remember not even saying anything to my family, especially to my Dad who as a USNA grad and recognized athlete. At that time, I felt certain he had enough pull to help get me in. Of course he did not.

Today, when an email TWE ‘explodes’ in the middle of a HS English class for a kid; how could he/she not be taken by surprise? I fprgot that unlike my experience, that kid has nowhere to retreat and digest news that will affect ‘the roads’ one chooses for the rest of their life.

I have no excuse to offer. Going forward, I will strive to consider what I am about to post here with more forethought before I hit ‘send’.

I appreciate that you wrote this...

Even though we are all anonymous here, in watching my DS go through this process for two years, at the USNA, USMA and USCGA, the one thing I've grown to love about these boards is the mutual support we provide one another...

Honestly, I did not like the tone you'd taken with those of us who have kids on-hold...I'm glad you had second thoughts about those comments.

Apology accepted.

Thanks for the ongoing encouragement, "NavyHoops." I'm a lot more stressed for my DS than I was for myself. I was offered the NAPS route for football and definitely needed the extra year, physically and mentally. I'd love for my son to go there, but he actually has an amazing resume to get directly in. Still in the running now and waiting. He's got the NROTC 4 yr and accepted to Auburn so far. Vanderbilt just notified him that they will be going out with acceptance notices tomorrow and UVa is April 1, so USNA is right in the time-frame mix. I think it's just the rolling admissions issue that puts everyone on edge versus other colleges.

I know I'm biased, but with my brother and I both being grads, I had hoped USNA would give more weight to legacy applicants (all else being equal). I read an article yesterday that legacy acceptance at Notre Dame is 24%, whereas USNA is under 5%. It shouldn't be a gimmee, but ever since my son has been around all the reunions in Annapolis and attended STEM after 8th grade, he has built a resume of leadership, grades, athletics, overseas missions work, etc. that is impeccable. Even the regional guidance LT at USNA commented, when we stopped in his Junior Year, before the Army-Navy game in Baltimore that everything he had done was what the Academy is looking for. Obviously I'm quite proud of him besides the laundry list of Class President, Eagle Scout, 3 Varsity Sports, great ACT, AP Calc, yada yada that everyone rattles off, he is the only applicant in the U.S. that completed the 2 week Special Warfare SEAL Training in Panama City Beach, last year. Only 10 were accepted to this training and 8 finished and received their Trident (authorized by the Navy SEALs). Every nomination board was impressed with him in his Summer Whites and asked him about it. Then you throw in the legacy issue and you'd think it would be a no-brainer. Even a 4 star and 1 star graduate who know him well, wrote letters about his impeccable character and other personal issues. So.... we wait :)

I can't imagine your son won't get in, and if he doesn't, this is a competitive class indeed. Hoping for the best for him.

My son is a second year applicant who is 3Q. Last year by this time we received the rejection letter, but no rejection letter yet. Wondering when those go out? We are in Florida.

I'm new to this forum but I've been waiting to hear back since I sent my application in around early August after going to NASS. I'm waiting on a waiver for braces that should be off well before I-day. I have 3 noms (Both GA senators and GA-12 MOC). I saw the post about rejections being sent out last Tuesday and I'm wondering is it a positive sign that I haven't heard back yet. Appreciate any insight anyone might have, thanks!

Looks like someone on Facebook page USNA Candidates received appointment by email Monday at 8:00 am. They are north of Austin, Texas. Don't think they are on forums.

Anyone know why class size is less than a few years ago
1191 2020
1211 2016

It's all about attrition. In my day, attrition was about 23% over the course of 4 yrs. Now, it's approaching single digits. Yet the number of officers USNA needs to produce with each graduating class (~1050) has remained roughly the same.

So, in 1981, USNA needed to admit 1350 plebes to produce 1050 officers in 1985. Now, they need admit ~1160 or even fewer to produce the same number (some admittees are international students who don't count against the totals). And, obviously, the number of offers of appointment decrease as the number of admitted plebes decreases, although this also varies based on yield.

The good news is those admitted are far more likely to graduate. The bad news is fewer get that chance.

And Hoops, SO GLAD to hear the "7 Ps" still exist at USNA. Words to live by.;)

In SC, I know of two in Charleston County who have received direct appts. Also, there are 5 NAPSters from SC: one in Charleston County, one in Berkeley County, one in Dorchester County, one in Orangeburg, and one in the upstate. Those 5 should receive their appointments prior to prep graduation, which is May 13.

My ds is South Georgia. District 2. There are two more from South Georgia that I know of. One is a member of SA forums. I don't think the other is

I have seen two on this thread from GA-08( not sure where that is), and one other( Usna engineer?) not sure what district. I do know of another appt here in metro ATL but he's not on the forum. I am curious though , USNA 2020GA , about the " both Senators nom"... Congrats by the way on your district 12 nom, but we were told that Sen Isakson and Sen Perdue did not double nominate?

My son accepted his appointment, and we live in SC. I know one from Greenville who has accepted. My son has a friend from Boys State who accepted, but I forgot where he is from.
