Email and updated portal, envelope follows shortly after.

Our DS was just contacted (yesterday) directly by our MOC. They said that we would get an e mail from the USNA as well as a portal change later this week. His BGO said he found out last week, but sounds like they wait for the MOC to notify the the applicant.

Last year, when put on the wait list. The portal was changed first and then the following day he was sent an email.
Congrats to you and your son! Approx what date was he wait-listed last year?

Just wanted to toss this out there. My DS went to the Stem and Summer Seminar programs at the Academy. At the SS he met and kept in touch with a few that made it in the first time and are plebes this year. Having someone currently in the Academy to talk to was invaluable and a huge motivating factor to reapply. Although each of these young adults are extremely qualified there are going to be rejection letters sent out. We got one last year, but here we are today.
For any of you, if that is the outcome, please feel free to reach out. I know that my DS would love to pass on the same type of support that he was so lucky to have. He learned it was great to have a direct line with someone in the academy, just to simply talk and ask questions, even if just by the occasional e mail. Not only that, going in this year he is going to see a few familiar faces. I think support is everything.
Not sure if this is the right forum to throw this out, but all of you parents have been so supportive, and although I am still choking down tears that he will be so far away, I am so happy it will be with kids from these types of families!!! GO NAVY!!!!!

He received notification of being on the wait list I believe about the 6th-8th of April, 2017 via a portal change, and then a day later via an e mail from USNA.

Thanks for the intel. My DD will attend NASS this June and applying for USNA class of 2023. We live in a highly competitive district so when (hoping not if) she is nominated, our rep will only put her on the slate for one SA. USNA is her top pick followed by USMA. She is plugging away and we'll hope for the best.

Good luck to all class of 2022 and to any re-aps in the future.

I was wondering why does the USNA wait list if they don't take candidates from the list when someone declines their appointment.

My understanding (and I could be all wrong) is that there are always a group of candidates who are very close to being offered an appointment, but they haven't made it through the last round of admissions board reviews. They are so close to maybe being a right fit, that they are put on a wait list. The wait list may very well have 10 candidates or 100 candidates on it. When the board comes around to that last group, maybe they have 65 offers left and only 60 candidates make it. That means they go to that wait list (which could be 100 candidates, mind you) and find the last 5.

Then they all yell "Jenga!"

I believe you are correct. Our DS only received a Congressional Nomination. Since he was not choose for that spot, but was completely qualified, my guess is that he went on the wait list. Not exactly sure how they determine who and who does not get on it. He was not given what number he was on the wait-list, but we were told they were ranked and as spots came available the person at the top of the waiting list was offered the Appointment. I hear that some years no one comes off the list and other years multiple people do. He had to make a tough decision of accepting the offer to UCSD, while still on the wait list due to the deadlines. That will be a tough one for a lot of the applicants.

There has not been 1 day in the last 19 years that I have not been proud of my DS, but today has to be at the top of the list.
He called from school (11 hours away) to tell me that he received an e mail from our Congressman with a full offer of Appointment!
It came with a mixture of tears and smiles. As a mom we know how special our kids are, now we get to share them with the world!!!!
From California it does not get much further away, so it is certainly a bitter sweet moment. Seem like it all happened in the blink of an eye. We have taught our kids to be strong and independent, now I guess we have to let go and let them be.

CONGARTS a 100x's over to those with appointments, and want to again point out that this is my DS 2nd time around applying, so please do not give up!!! A year is nothing in the big picture, plus I think it makes them that much stronger!!

GO NAVY!!!!

Don't look back and ask why, Look ahead and ask why not? No regrets!!!!

Absolutely agree with this! DD was bitterly disappointed last year when she was 3Q but unable to secure a nomination. She held out hope for a NAPS offer, but that didn't come. Persistence is key.

She reapplied from Georgia Tech, where she experienced a level of academic rigor like she had never had before, coming from a rural high school where she wasn't really adequately prepared for the rigors of GT, and where few graduates go to schools like GT. She had a difficult time with some of her courses, and we both had read that she needed to excel in her first year in rigorous courses, so she was almost resigned to another turndown. All this to say - if it's what you want, never, never give up.

Having had two on the wait-list, this is my general understanding. Admissions knows exactly how it wants the incoming class to look in terms of size, demographics etc. The number of appointments offered is much higher than the actual number of those who accept their appointments (yield) and show up on I-day. I've been told the wait list can be looked at as "you are qualified, we (admissions) would love to have you, but we just don't have room at the table right now". Those with appointments have until May 1 to accept or deny their appointment. If in a particular year the number of candidates who decline their offers, or who are injured, or change their minds causes the "hard number" to drop below what admissions wants on I-day-- a few on the wait list may be offered an appointment to bring the number back up. The reality is that in the past several years the yield has been high enough that admissions did not have to take any or very very few from the wait list. As far as who is pulled from the list, it is also still connected to nomination slates etc.

I was wondering why does the USNA wait list if they don't take candidates from the list when someone declines their appointment.

Semper Gumby -- Admissions wants the flexibility to make last minute appointments to fill out the class. It is rare, but occasionally someone gets called up.... I remember a classmate who literally got the call a few days before I Day. (Before this turns into a deep questions about how someone gets put on the wait list, who gets pulled from the wait list, or whether being on the wait list gives you head of the line privileges the next year, I don't know, and suspect that nobody knows for sure, how the wait list works. It's one of those tools that Admissions uses for flexibility, and is necessarily unstructured. (I have however heard a lot of anecdotal stories about persons who are wait listed getting in the following year -- but of course, never hear about those wait listed and who don't reapply or don't get in)

Did you DD get an Appointment this year??

What is 3Q?

3Q - Triple Qualified.
(I Believe) it means that the applicant is 100% qualified (medically, physically, academically) to attend, but they still have to secure the nomination to get the appointment.

Yes, she did. She secured both a Congressional and an NROTC nomination this year. Got the call on Friday and the portal updated today.

Congratulations to her!! Sounds like their situations were very similar. Would love to get them in contact with each other!

The "offer to UCSD": what that a 4-yr NROTC scholarship?

University of California San Diego (UCSD). When you are accepted to the University they also make you accept by a certain date and put down a deposit. He had to make that decision while still on the wait list at the USNA.
