Class of 2022 DIY USNA Appointment Thread

Reapply, Reapply, Reapply!!!
It's a few hoops to jump through, but so many re-applicants are accepted!!!!
Good luck !!!
Thank you! My son is going to reapply. He will have a heavy academic load at UVA School of Engineering. It seems that joining the NROTC at UVA would be a good idea but I know how important his first semester grades are...what do you advise regarding the NROTC? I understand that it could open additional opportunities such as a NROTC scholarship and/or a nomination for the USNA.

My sons concerns were the same as yours. U. C. San Diego did not offer ROTC so he would have had to travel to San Diego State and the time factor was just too much. UCSD is on the quarter system so he took English, Political Science, Calculus 20A and Chemistry 6A his First Quarter. He decided to bypass sports as well and simply concentrate on his classes. He pulled all A's his first Quarter, with nothing much to add other than the grades. UCSD is a very competitive school, so he was over joyed with getting straight A's. His 2nd Quarter he took Chem 6B, Physics 2A, Calculus 20B, and 3 quarter took Calculus 20C, Physic 2B, Chem 6C and Chem Lab 7l, which he will finish up just a week before having to head to I-Day.
They really stressed it would be a good idea to do ROTC, so he is just going to have to decide if he can handle the work load . Our son decided that he really wanted to get the best grades he could and again, being in a really competitive school he knew it would not be easy. When you reapply they have real strict guideline that you have to follow so make sure that you son reads over all the rules for a re applicant. Do not want to give admissions any reason to put him to the side. Really concentrate on the essay and use what he has learned in this last year. We also really kept in touch with our local Congressman. Let them know how serious you are . Last but not least, apply to every nomination source tht you can. We made the mistake the first time around of just sending the request to 1 source. Do not limit yourself.
As a re-applicant you will not be able to submit and finalize you package until your first semester/quarter grades are in. Make sure that you have everything else 100% complete as early as possible and that way when your first semester grades come in about December/January you can submit and it will be ready for them to look at. Not 100% sure if getting your paperwork i faster helps, but it certainly does not hurt. The sooner they have it the better. Congratulations on your sons acceptance to UVA. It is great to have such a good plan B. Tell him not to stress. Our Son Nathan LOVED having a year in San Diego. He got use to being away from home, lost the homesickness, got use to college classes, waking himself up, getting himself to class and I think that will be such a leg up for him this hear. We also got to get use to talking on the phone a lot v.s. seeing each other, so I think that will make it easier being clear across the Country. I really feel it was a blessing in disguise. Not to mention the fact the he is hoping to be able to double major since he will be able to validate so many classes. It was disappointing for all of us to get the denial the first year, but it just put more fire in him to make sure that it happened the 2nd time around. I wish you the best and if your son needs someone to chat with at the Academy, he is certainly welcome to keep in touch with Nathan. I wish you and your son the best and really hope that he decides to reapply. I can tell you it certainly was worth it for us. GOOD LUCK!

My DD applied for 2021 but was unable to secure a nomination, so she didn't get an appointment. She was bitterly disappointed, but it didn't take long for her to decide to apply again. She had a solid Plan B in place - NROTC scholarship at Georgia Tech. In hindsight, it was probably the best route for her. Not only did it give her another nomination source, she was exposed to the military lifestyle, which only confirmed for her that she still wanted USNA. Her NROTC buddies became like family, and at times, I think, became somewhat of a refuge when the academic going got rough (she graduated from a rural, not-very-rigorous high school and struggled mightily with some of the courses at GT). Through NROTC she was able to secure a nomination (along with a Congressional one the second time); NROTC also provided academic support for some of the tougher classes. While it did add responsibilities and subtract free time, I think the benefits (academic support, a new "family," exposure to the demands of a military lifestyle) definitely outweighed the commitments demanded by NROTC. As an aside, she did become part of the crew team at GT, but she quickly realized that, for her, it was going to be impossible to do crew, NROTC, and keep up her academics, so she had to let it go. All things considered, I'd definitely recommend going the NROTC route if his intent is to reapply. Good luck to your son!

@NoGaNavyMom, I think you raised a great daughter. To have the drive to spend a year at Georgia Tech and then begin again as a Plebe, is something I am sure you are proud of, and rightly so! I think her Plebe year will be a lot easier for her, than some of her peers there. I hope that she gets lots of chances to help her fellow Plebes with her knowledge and experience gained from this last year.

She sounds like she'll make a great officer in 2022.

Thank you for the kind words! She is (and her dad and I are, too) so grateful for the opportunity and a little apprehensive, too. To paraphrase what the congressman said at the send-off dinner last night, these young men and women are among the best and brightest in North Georgia, but they will soon be in the company of some of the best America has to offer, and they will be challenged like never before. Her dad and I were both enlisted Navy, so she has an idea of what is to come (as far as Plebe Summer goes), but I'm sure the end of Plebe Summer is just the beginning of the challenges she (and the rest of 2022) will face. We're very excited to see where this takes her, and we're looking forward to getting to know other USNA families.

You mentioned that you hope she gets lots of chances to help her fellow Plebes, and that perfectly corresponds with what one of the 2018 USNA graduates said last night when he addressed those at the send-off dinner. He had a list of 6 pieces of advice, and one of them was to be a team player - help others when you can and be ready to accept help if you need it. He gave several anecdotes about how he helped and was helped, not just in Plebe Summer, but throughout his 4 years at the academy. It was really inspiring to hear him, and the other 2018 graduate, who focused her comments on "a day in the life."

I think it is wonderful that you all are willing to give your advice for these young men and women. I know that NoGaNavyMom, like us, are getting ready for Plebe Summer, but it puts a smile on my face to see that you are all still on the forum helping others out. I have received some PM with some kids that were really upset when they got their denial and in need of just someone to listen and support them. There is never 1 set way for everyone, so being able to hear all of the different paths to the Academy I believe is so helpful. Also hearing that many incredible kids do not make it the first time but get in as re-applicants, I think makes a huge difference. You are all great parents, can't wait to meet some of you this year, and the rest of you next year!!!!

Take a balanced program in the fall and do well. No reason to overload and kill yourself. Enjoy the freshman year with your Unit and UVA while reapplying. Some change their mind to stay and in case you have to stay establishing a good connection while you’re there is a good thing to have.

in that same regard - 1209 were appointed at I-day- only 12 did not make it through Plebe Summer- 1 of the lowest rates but not the lowest-
