Class of 2023 USMMA Appointment DIY Thread

The USMMA Honor Code states that a midshipman "Shall not lie, cheat, or steal". Do you not think that knowing the SOC ahead of time is cheating?

I know that it's not, and the honor board would throw the case of someone having a bearings book ahead of time out of the window everyday of the week and twice on Sunday. But, on a technicality. A 2023 plebe cannot commit an honor offense until he has taken that oath and been presented with an honor manual. Learning something NOW cannot be an honor offense in the future. That's a technicality, but it disproves your point 100%.

The point is that INDOC is about building camraderie with your company and class and learning to be successful as a future midshipman. Starting your life at Kings Point by purposely gaining an unfair advantage on your classmates is contrary to these goals. Giving wrong answers to questions where you have studied and know the right answers, in order to deceive the cadre and your classmates, is wrong. Your attempt to twist this hypothetical scenario into something honorable is wrong. More importantly, your mindset of looking for technical ways to escape the spirit of the honor code, rather than encouraging moral and above board conduct, sets a bad example for incoming plebe candidates.

Mr2020,
You are what we call a 2/20 guy in the Fire service.Someone who has been on the job for two years but talks like he has 20 years experience. You should use your mouth less and your ears more. That is all now carry on.

In the fire service? You mean at the fire department? I don't think it's right for people to say some of these things. I am an expert on Indoc, because I've done indoc and ran indoc, train the trainer, indoc organizational meetings, performance evals, etc...I don't think anyone on here has that specific experience. I'm certainly a novice at many things, most things, but indoc is not one of them. I don't appreciate the comments.

That's a technicality, but it disproves your point 100%.

Whether it's TECHNICALLY not an offense is besides the point. I never said to bring someone before the honor board for having the bearings book; that is ridiculous. However, having a copy of it ahead of time when you know you're not supposed to really is a form of cheating. There's a reason you're not given it ahead of time. The spirit of what I am saying is true. If you're not supposed to have it ahead of time and you know you're not supposed to have it ahead of time, then yes, it's cheating to have it.

Back to the original question from TallShipSailor about getting a copy of Bearings so one can be better prepared for I-Day. I thought about that myself around Christmas thinking it would help my DS and be a great gift. We are conditioned to believe that thinking and planning ahead is a positive trait and show time management. When I researched this same question on this Forum I was surprised by the response of not wanting to be "that guy" and how your classmates will resent you and your cadre will make you pay. Therefore, I never acquired my DS a copy, but certainly didn't think it would have been cheating. I thought of it preparing as you go getting tutoring and taking advance classes for Physics and Calculus or training for the CFA. Also I thought about the training high school ROTC candidates had that might give them an advantage over their classmates. But taking the advice of those of you with much more experience with USMMA I didn't pursue in acquiring a copy for my DS. And I understand it is a bonding experience with your classmates and you don't want to make others look bad.

But there IS a difference. Studying Physics or Calculus or getting physically fit for the CFA are all ways of preparing yourself. The Academy WANTS you to have taken Physics and Calculus in high school and TELLS the applicant to become physically fit. The Academy does NOT want plebe candidates to have the bearings book ahead of time. Big big difference there.

Like I said I didn't go ahead and purchase a copy of "Bearings" back in December after reading related posts on this forum. My DS didn't know anything about it until I mentioned it to him recently and he said he wouldn't have wanted it anyway for reasons so stated. But as a parent my intention was never to enable cheating. Live and let learn. Each cadet will arrive with a different set of readiness. Some I assume will be better adjusted to the regiment life style than others having attended high school JROTC and/or military prep school. Some will be better prepared acedemically having taken more advance math and science classes. I certainly never would have wanted ny DS to stand out in a negative way. Thanks for all teh ongoing great advice from all the experienced and knowlegable USMMA posters.

31 Appointments
22 Accepted

Class of 2021 appointments on 3/31/17:
14 Appointments
4 Plan to accept (none have specified this for 2022 or 2023)
4 Accepted

Big increase in earlier appointments, but running behind on acceptances. I know there are some 'Undecideds' who are waiting for waiver approvals so realistically the number of 'Accepted' should go up when the approvals are issued. Hoping to see some other 'Undecideds' make up their mind soon to commit to KP or to give others an opportunity!

Here are the totals as of the end of March as compared with classes of 2021 and 2022:

20 Accepted

Class of 2022 appointments as of 3/29/18:
31 Appointments
22 Accepted

What percentage do you think are self reporting on this forum this year? I saw that some suggested in past only 10% and if that was the case this year there has already been 500 appointments offered. I'm hoping the increase is just the result of more self reporting.

I think it is quite a bit higher this year than the 10-20% that we've heard of in the past. I would suggest it is more like 20-25%. There are still more appointments to go out and I doubt if they are all because of declines.* It makes sense that if we are seeing 20% reporting by SAF participants, 250-300 appointments sounds reasonable at this stage.

*Please note this is just my opinion based on talking with appointees, candidates, and others in our state and NOT from any other knowledge!
