Class of 2024 AEP Parents Thread

Hi, I'm a parent who just attended the AEP February session that occurred yesterday and today. DS attended AIM last year but wanted exposure to a day in the life of a cadet while classes were in session so asked to attend AEP. He's glad he did. He wondered how it would differ from the swab summer experience and had his questions answered. He really liked that he was teamed up with a 4th class cadet as the cadet and his peers were most close in age and still getting through their first year. DS found the experience informative and reassuring.

As mentioned by @applicant, there were originally three appointees intending to sign commitments today, but at least three more made up their minds last night or this morning and committed to attending. It was fun to watch the surprise on a few faces as someone's DD or DS decided then and there it was the right place for them to be and went forward to sign. The signings occurred in the museum which made for nice surroundings. I believe most of the parents found some part of the AEP beneficial and informative. I found the staff and cadet representatives very transparent. I'm extremely impressed with how open the USCGA has been. Meeting other parents and sharing experiences and dilemmas was valuable. If DS does commit it will be nice to see familiar faces in the future (DS remains undecided as he's waiting on responses from other schools before making a final decision). The dinner sponsored Thursday evening featured Academy staff, Admissions staff and some senior (1/class) cadets. It was informal and they floated around to try and touch base with all the parents and answer any questions asked. On the second day we met the faculty from the academic department DS had chosen as his area of interest, and this was very rewarding.

If a student is unsure or on the fence I would encourage attending AEP. If a parent wants to learn more about the USCGA and has a chance to attend I would recommend it. If a student is already committed to attending USCGA and had the opportunity to visit at an earlier date it may not be worth the trip, unless it's not a financial and time burden. We live just under 300 miles away and have family in CT so it wasn't a huge burden for us to drive. For what it's worth, if you have to fly and can afford a ticket to Hartford or Providence it's well worth avoiding the potential traffic issues with Boston's Logan airport or NYC area airports. Boston vs NYC airports? - go with Boston unless you're planning a visit to NYC or the NYC metro area.

Hope this was helpful.
Was there a lot of pressure on the kids to accept their appointments? It sounds like less than half did at this particular session. We are most looking forward to meeting the faculty and some of the Civil Engineering cadets.

Another potential benefit is saving miles if using frequent flier benefits. I got two round-trip tickets from DFW to Providence for the same number of miles as one round-trip ticket elsewhere in the region. Flight out was really early, but the upside was more time on the ground there.

Great question - I'd describe it more of an atmosphere of hope and hopefulness rather than one of pressure. It seemed to me the admissions staff tried tremendously to avoid putting pressure on the kids and families. Instead, they did their best to provide a positive and enthusiastic atmosphere and what I consider a sense of "eager hopefulness" that students might make a decision during their visit. But on more than a few occasions the staff made it clear they did not want anyone to make a decision before they were ready - and to me it came across as a sincere and genuine sentiment. Don't get me wrong, it's a recruiting sales pitch and I think some folks may feel that twinge of guilt about not saying yes after all is said and done; but at best it's a soft pitch and not a hard sell. I got the impression the staff would really prefer a student commit because they feel the USCGA is the right place for them versus commit because they were pressured into doing so.

We recently switched our AEP session from April to March- having thought the invited session was the only option. Thanks for all the great information; we're looking forward to meeting everyone soon! We'll be taking the train to New London. My DD already accepted her appointment, but we're really excited since this is our first visit to USCGA (well, besides driving by it on I-95).

Looks like we will have a free day after AEP in the area (or maybe closer to the Hartford area) on Saturday March 20 before flying out on the 21st from BDL. It's our first time in the area. Any suggestions on something fun or interesting for a mom and DS to do that extra day while we are there? We'll have a rental car. Thanks!

I would visit the New England Air Museum next to the Bradley Airport runway.

Check out the USS Nautilus (submarine) Museum in Groton. It's right across the river from the academy. Fort Griswold, also in Groton, is a monument you can climb and see the Thames River. Also Mystic Aquarium is awesome. If it's nice, you could walk around downtown Mystic or Olde Mistick Village to kill an hour.

So my son’s invite only had the April 23 session on it which doesn’t work at all but the April 7 session is during spring break and would work great. Is there a way to change your session? He’s contacting his AO, but if someone has already done it, I can pass info to him.

Several people said they were able to change. The contact at the bottom of the invite email can help .

All I did was search for AEP in the “search calendar” and then registered for the one I wanted. For some reason it won’t come up for me anymore, but maybe that’s because I’ve already gone to it.

You can register for ANY session with openings. The invites by default listed the last one.

DS has registered for the 19 March session.

We have decided to stay at the Mystic Marriot instead of Spring Hill Suites as the Parents Dinner will be at the Marriot per the agenda. Our previos 3 visits we stayed at Spring Hill due to the fact that it is spitting distance to the gate.

Starting a thread for parents to meet and greet prior to their respective AEP Visits.

Hope to meet and greet many of you! Are you attending? If so which session?

Go Bears!
My son just registered for the March 19-20 session as well. He hasn't committed yet, so is looking forward to meeting some of his potential classmates. Hopefully a few other Civil Engineering majors will be there.

Just watched RADM Kelly's update on the CGA Parents 2024 Facebook page. He mentioned that all events for the month of April are cancelled (with a few exceptions, AEP not one of them). Was holding on to hope for the April 23 AEP. Expected this would happen, but still disappointed. 😞

Where can I find this parents Facebook page?
