Class of 2024 boots and low quarters

Excuse the question from the clue-less father, but I've got a question about the low quarters. Should my son arrive on R-Day with them shined or just how they came when purchased?

They don't have to be shined. He'll spend plenty of time shining them during Beast. I would recommend that he show up without them looking scuffed up but he not attract attention with highly shined shoes.

Thank you!

My DS has a few pairs of the correct Bates low quarters from his ROTC battallion. They are in good shape but have a bit of minor scuffing. Should we get new ones or should he just bring the best of those shoes? Is West Point expecting new ones or do they understand that some families need to save where they can? And if he brings up ones that are in good shape but clearly not new, will this be a problem?

Think of it this way: the $2,000 deposit has been waived for this class and the parents probably won’t be allowed to travel to R-Day so why stand out from everyone else for $100.

If they can be still be polished and look professional in uniform, he’ll be fine. Prior service folks tend to bring used shoes to CBT because they had them for their dress uniform so it’s not unknown. The idea is more do the shoes still look professional that he represents the uniform well. If yes, I wouldn’t sweat it. Broken in shoes will be a blessing for his feet the amount of walking he will be doing in them.

Unless something has drastically changed, you’ll be issued shoe polish.

In the Instructions for Applicants Offered Admission it says that I will need to bring low quarters, boots, running shoes, and court shoes to R-Day. The Boot Memo addressed the low quarters, the boots, and the running shoes which I have already purchased. Why didn't it say anything about the court shoes? Should I just buy a pair of basketball shoes?

The most common "injury" is from shoes/boots that are not broken in. Absolute misery trying to march carrying a rucksack with blisters.

@prospective2019 Can you give a few examples of court shoes you and/or classmates have used? I am thinking Nike Metcons or a low top basketball shoe, but I could be off so wanted to clarify. Also, is it a good idea to have a dark running shoe due to mud/dirt? Thanks.

They got issued to us last year. They're New Balance, I don't know the model. Think dad-grilling shoes. I doubt you need to purchase them, no class above us has ever had to. Color of running shoe doesn't matter; focus more on fit.

Hey, I just wanted to point out something I found on the west point website. If anyone is wondering what boots/low quarters they can start breaking in, there is a link attached. I believe admissions will issue the boot letter sometime in the near future, so it might be better to wait on that. Anyways, congratulations to all my classmates! https://s3.amazonaws.com/usma-media/inline-images/military/directorate_of_cadet_activities/pdfs/PlebeShoeOrderForm.pdf
