"rated performing artists"!
That's fantastic 👏
Could you define what they consider "rated"?
Thank you

I did not realize that USCGA is that small per year! I thought it was as big as the other service academies with around 1000 per year, but only around 300? Dang you get the know everyone a little better!

We were also told the academy had a record breaking year of over 10,000 applications started!!

That’s a question best saved for your Admissions Officer or the Director of Cadet Bands, Chief Warrant Officer Ian Frankel. As a former CGA musician, my best guess is that the Director selected these individuals out of all musically-inclined applicants as priority musicians and passed that onto Admissions. It’s similar to when coaches notify admissions of certain student-athletes that are applying.

My daughter has been in the Honor Choir program for 3 years. I will ask her to request a recommendation from her Choir director. Thank you for the reply.

You're welcome! If your daughter is interested in Glee Club or the Cadet Chorale, she should absolutely reach out to Dr. Robert Newton. He has been at CGA for a long time and runs an excellent program. Both programs are excellent and provide a number of opportunities and experiences. Be sure to ask about Fairwinds too! CGA website describes it as a "select ensemble of twelve female singers chosen from the Cadet Glee Club by audition. They feature close harmony renditions of a variety of music, specializing in show/swing tunes."

Definitely recommend this, but Dr. Newton will be retiring this August (after 50 years), so it may not be him that you talk to!

That's what I get for relying on the CGA website to check if he was still running the programs. I'm very happy for Doc Newton, but it is certainly difficult to imagine CGA without him!

You are all giving us more reasons to work towards admission! Chorale and Equestrian Club are top of her list. Thanks again.

Both are great opportunities, as long as commissioning as a Coast Guard officer is at the very top of her list. ;)

Make sure your DD goes through every aspect of the USCGA website, it was updated in the last couple of years and is a extremely useful resource into the world of CGA and life as a junior officer in the CG.

My biggest takeaway is it looks like the Fleet needs Naval Architects as it is the biggest major by far this year.

Congratulations to all and good luck to 2026 applicants!

At I Day I heard from a couple students that they're really trying to get the EE numbers up. Of course one of them, a first year, said his goal was to get the degree, get to the fleet and never take up the subject again, so take that for what it's worth.

My son is currently attending Swab Summer and will study NAME. USCGA staff put out that the US Coast Guard is woefully deficient in the NAME career field and there is high attrition of junior officers with NAME major (one and done). Surprisingly, last year’s number one employer of junior officers with the NAME major was the financial sector. You’d think it would be the maritime industry.

She's definitely working towards admission and eventual commission. 😊
I mentioned extracurriculars because I trust USCGA wants a wellrounded candidate.
I really appreciate all the feedback and suggestions.

Just wanna add that not all of those 465 were fully qualified, so the class was not only people who accepted appointments but many were disqualified for say medical reasons.

Of the 2,070 completed applications, do we know the male/female breakdown? I'm wondering how many men and how many women completed the application.

@PalmTreeBreeze - I cannot find USCGA stats for this. Their public stats do not break out male/female in the applicant pool. The only one I have found was West Point for class of 2024 and they had 30% female in the applicant pool. My guess is that the ratio at all SA are similar.
