Class of 2027 Waitlist

My DS had a follow up zoom call with the DOA yesterday to go over his application and what he could do to improve it to reapply for class of 2028. His plan b had been to self prep at MMI this year but the director said that he’s actually beyond what MMI could do for him academically and that it was more for those who needed to improve in math or fitness or something. He said his main issue was not getting his app in during early action. He encouraged him to take classes closer to home towards his major and by the end of the call mentioned that he would like to pursue getting my DS a letter of assurance for the class of 2028.

Can anyone tell me what that really is and if his advice makes sense? We have no experience with military stuff so I’m unsure if he’s taking a risk just doing local community college classes vs. a military prep school program? This is his dream so we really want to help him make the right decision to have the best chance at getting in next year. Any insight/advice would be appreciated!

Why are you only mentioning community college? Did he get accepted, or can he still be accepted, at a 4-year school? Would that make more sense for you? Schools offer some really tough freshman classes, depending on the major. Not knowing your location, a 4-year school several hundred miles from home may still be “closer to home” than MMI.

He has been accepted at other 4-year schools as well. We were just thinking about how to keep costs down but that makes sense that a 4-year institution would probably have more rigorous classes and look better on his re-application. We’re in Oregon so yes there is one closer that he was accepted to. Thanks for the feedback.

So I give my opinion. DS was waitlisted in 2019. Was accepted to prestigious schools engineering schools including RPI and flagship state university. Also had generous scholarships for mid level engineering schools. He turned it all down to go to MMI. And it turned out great for him. MMI gives a true military college environment. If you can’t hack MMI you will fail at a service academy. If DS wasn’t accepted to service academy he also earned acceptance to Virginia Tech and Citadel after MMI. Not saying MMI is for everyone but it’s more than just a community college. Now if you slack off at MMI you are on the road to nowhere. Just our experience. MMI has a proven track record for USCGA self preps who are willing to work hard.

I have heard great things about people who did not receive the acceptance to CGA on their first round, but went to MMI taking the same classes at the prep scholars and then reapplied and got in.

So a little off the beaten path, but my DS has opted to go to his plan B first choice based on the fact that it has a tough DII wrestling program. (In fact, he just left Friday for summer camp 😢🥲) USCGA has always been his top choice, but his backup has him headed for a 5yr MS in Sports Med, with plans to enlist afterwards. It will be interesting to see what happens in the next year since he's planning on reapplying to USCGA in July. Either way I know it will be great for him!

Adding a link below - if he gets degreed in Sports Med (are we talking physical therapy?), no need for him to enlist. Navy, and I am quite sure, Air Force and Army have PT/sports med officer specialities. It’s a direct commission program. There is also eligibility for school loan repayment.

And, the U.S. Public Health Service, USPHS, is one of the 8 uniformed services, though their commissioned officers corps is not an armed service. These officers wear Navy-style uniforms and their own unique insignia, enjoy the same benefits. These fine people and their service are not mentioned enough!

I just wanted to say thank to everyone here for the support and encouragement you show to applicants, cadets and families. Many of us read and may not post, but please know that just ‘listening in’ to these conversations can give someone hope.

My son received a conditional appointment to the Class of 2027 from the waitlist on 05.24.23. To his credit, he has been patient, persistent and prepared for the past four weeks knowing full well that his medical appeal could come through, his appeal could be denied or he could possibly be cleared after the start of swab summer.

We’ve had unopened Amazon packages of socks, tshirts and underwear sitting in a corner of our living room wondering if he will get word before the 30-day return window closes. But he was ready. Ready with completed and signed (in blue ink) forms. Ready with personal documents and extra copies just in case the call from USCGA admissions came.

A ‘SCAM LIKELY’ phone call came in on Friday, 06.16.23. I personally never answer scam likely calls. Thankfully, my son recognized the area code for New London, CT. This could be the go/no-go call he has been waiting for. BREATHE.

As I type this, my son is flying from the west coast to the northeast so he can attend RISE before reporting to the academy on Monday, 06.26.23.

He and we, his family, would not have been as prepared for his journey mentally, physically and emotionally without the resources and encouragement of the members of this forum. I hope to meet some of you in person in the near future.

From the bottom of my heart, Thank You!

Congratulations!!!! I said in this thread a while back that its not over until Day One. We met a Cadet who got an offer 5 days out. I hope that you and your family can get there for Day One and Swearing in. Good Luck, stay on the forum, and reach out and join to the Parents Association for support.

This gave me goosebumps! As a mom of a former waitlister I know the gratitude for your child being given the opportunity … so happy for y’all!!

Haven't checked in in a while. Any other 2027 waitlisters re-applying for 2028? My DS is hoping to get his application done before heading over for his first year of college!

Congratulations!!! My son was offered the short short very last waitlist, but had to turn it down because of a back injury 😭 So we're back on the saddle for 2028. 🤞
