Class of 2027 Waitlist

The military that I served in was pretty clear on what the word "required" meant. Also, 2 of the the things that were stressed to me during my service were:

1. Attention to detail
2. Ability to follow simple instructions

The posting above looks pretty simple to me. Follow the color/quantity/and all other specific instructions provided.
My advice: Ignore all posts that do not go along with documented recommendations.

For DD2 '26 we followed the list assiduously and only added some extra underwear. Her oversized daypack was large and was full to the brim. Passport was included. For cadets who have had sufficient notice, showing up without everything on the list is not a good look.

However, for very late offers, some slack would be appropriate. That being said, if the cadet does not already have a passport, the application should be completed as soon as the offer is received, if possible. You can send it via tracked mailing once it is received. Swabs do receive mail and packages during Swab Summer.

Thanks for posting what’s already been posted and doesn’t really pertain to the question asked or advice given in this thread. We aren’t talking about a kid who has an appointment in hand. If we were I would agree with you. We are talking about someone on the waitlist, who historically has a very small chance, and some years zero chance, of coming of the list, spending a bunch of money to expedite a passport they don’t otherwise need, on the tiny chance they get plucked from that waitlist at the last minute. The passport will get zero use during swab summer. Another parent who came off the waitlist has already stated from personal experience that the passport issue wasn’t an issue at all for those coming off the waitlist. As I have said several times, and will say here for the last time, go ahead and waste the money if you want instead of making a phone a call and getting the word straight from the bear’s mouth.

You're welcome. I though it might help to read the official USCGA documentation for those who couldn't seem to make the determination between what was required and what was recommended.

As for clarification of issue at hand, you added this comment to the string, "You think CGA requires everyone on the waitlist to go get passports on the off and unlikely chance they get plucked from the waitlist?"

The obvious answer is ABSOLUTELY YES! - they won't know who is a waitlist kid or a regular admission kid on Day One, and ALL will be 100% expected to have everything on their Required Items List.

And is it really good advice to state comments like, "While CGA wants them to have their passports, they never use them" ?

They don't "want" them to have it, they "require" them to have it. Okay, so we start our potential career in military service by deciding what we should consider important based upon whether it will be used or not?

I personally never used my weapon, but I was required to have it.

So, if I'm a parent of a kid on the USCGA waitlist, I'm gonna listen to you and not do anything because of the "tiny" and "unlikely" chance they get "plucked" off the waitlist....and my kid is going to not follow the Required Packing List and show up with gray underwear, etc. Not a chance.

Lastly, I counted 6 kids last year who posted on this Forum that they were accepted off of the Class of 2026 waitlist. One can assume there were at least 2 or 3 times as many who did not post here. I wonder it their parents didn't prepare at all for their kids to report and just showed up?

Waitlist parents and kids...believe me, do everything possible you can between now and Day One. You may have only a few weeks from the time that you hear they are admitted until reporting day. WHITE socks and t-shirts can be purchased quickly - passports take time, Dr's appointments (for shots) sometimes take time. Be proactive.

Dear Lord. Have a nice life.

Yes, this is absolutely the case! I’m not sure why anyone would be contrary to simply encouraging people who stay on the waitlist to be prepared. As I recall in the later stages my DD had to essentially opt in to staying on the waitlist, and when you do that it seems irresponsible to not be prepared! If nothing else it is a stress relief knowing you’ve done all you can and if you get the call you’re ready. There is 0 harm if you don’t get the call.

Day One is stressful baseline so anyway you can ease that seems wise.

We were required to mail in my son's original Social Security card (and an original birth certificate, but I have a few of those) with his passport application. We did that back in February. He has received his passport, but he does not have his Social Security card back. I'm hoping it arrives before the June 1 deadline. This might be something to consider since USCGA also requires you to submit your original Social Security card. If your Social Security card is hung up at the passport office, you can't submit it to USCGA. Unless I'm missing something? Maybe someone has more information on this. I haven't panicked yet, since I'm hoping we still have enough time to receive the Social Security card back.

You can also request a duplicate social security card from your social security office. You are allowed 10 replacements in your lifetime so using up one now (assuming this would be the 1st), isn't a big deal. And name changes (i.e. taking on a new married name) don't count against your 10. The turnaround time for a duplicate SS card is shorter than the time it takes to get a passport.

If you are going to request a passport I would recommend you request it expedited and pay for 1-2 days shipping. Expedited processing will get you the passport in 27 federal business days. Expedited costs $60 and 2 day mail is $19. If you already submitted regular as I did, check your status and then call the contact number. Select you language (1 for English), press 2, then press 4. That should get you to a representative.

Absolutely agree and I would just add this following statement for future classes (as I know I scoured this site for advice). Set up the passport appointment in the fall when applying to any SA. It is a requirement for all the SAs and with all the stress and unknown aspects of getting an appointment, it is an "easy" thing to check off early on.

(I say this with absolutely no judgement to those who find themselves missing items at the last minute. We have all been there!!)

And, if no joy and re-application is next step, be assured USCGA will not forget they made it to the waitlist, as people they would be happy to have in the class if there is room. That is a force multiplier with another year of hard work and determination.
What about someone with a TWE, then a waitlist, and a third time. I'm seeing a latter trend here:)

I know we have another week or two to a month to "wait and see", but just wanted to jump on here to see how you all are doing. We are going full steam into Plan B (we just bought our DS's one way ticket 😭), and as he's our first born it's a little rough on me (mom). But I'm also keeping the hope of USCGA in my back pocket because even though it's a long shot, it's still a possibility. So while we're excited, it's still slightly unnerving not being 100% certain of what is going to happen in the next couple months. 🤪 Hoping you are all handling better than me and know that you're definitely not alone! Best wishes to all of you in the next few weeks! Hoping to hear some great news from you!

Thank you. Very well said we are in the exact same boat. Getting very excited about plan B but , “the call” is in the back of our minds. Trying to get everything prepared for either option until there is only one. Good luck.

That is a good idea...to get ready just in case! Passports, immunizations, socks, tee shirts, etc. We are in the process of doing that just in case, especially if the call comes late. Good luck to everyone who is waiting and lets hope a lot are taken off the wait list!

Does anyone know how long they have to accept if they’re on the waitlist and get an appointment?

Is there a document that lists what they would need to purchase to be ready to go to the academy if/when they get the call? We’re ready on the other things like passport and immunizations but wasn’t sure if we should plan to get some other items. Thanks!

My youngest was pulled. May 11th. I dont recall how long he had to decide. It was at least a few days, not immediately. IMO, most know their answer rather quickly.

There were a few reductions in the waitlist that occur. It’s whittled down as state slates are finished up. Candidates will be pulled from the list, and other will be TWE’ed.

If you look back on this thread, I believe someone posted the cadet handbook and immunization form from an earlier class. Assuming the items are similar if not the same, it's a good list to go off of. I just did the passport and immunizations because those take time. The other items, I have in my Amazon/Target cart and will pull the trigger if he gets called up. I figure the latest they'd notify us is 5/31, and they would report 6/24, so that gives time for clothing and other small items.
