For any of you whose student was in a club sport - in our case, it is Crew - how did your daughter/son answer the Varsity letter question, and were you given any guidance? Our Crew team has both Novice and Varsity levels, and we were told to ask the Admissions Office for guidance on answering the question, but no one has gotten back to us.

Next fall your HS will be asked to submit an 'Activities' record in addition to academic transcript. Ask your HS counselor now if/how the club sport will be reflected. Some club sports are directly affiliated with one school while others [travel soccer teams etc] are completely independent of any specific HS.
So what you put down now should jive with the official school activity form later on.
If a varsity award won't appear on the official school record then maybe confirmation from the club director etc would be requested.

Same situation here except for nrotc. I've rowed for 5 years and I'm about to race at my last regatta this weekend. I answered no to the varsity letter question. I explained in the addition comments section what boats I was in, how I placed at States, etcetera. I said that I had been on varsity for 4 years but due to the sport being a club.

I would suggest waiting for the response from admissions, as it's possible I missed out on some available points.

Personally I don't think that for crew varsity letters are valuable anyways, as you are required told up to varsity after a year of novice.

The last thing I said about moving up to varsity is a us rowing requirement, for those who don't row.

Yes - I understand the US Rowing standards, but being on Varsity doesn't mean you're necessarily in a boat. You could be a spare the entire time, or be in the "C"/3V8 boat, or something like that. Some HS Varsity teams don't necessarily award a letter if you're on the team, but sit the bench the entire time. And yes, like you said, we just want to make sure that he's not missing out on something for his WCS.

Well, he's homeschooled, so that makes me the counselor! Hopefully we'll hear something from Admissions. Our Field Force Representative seemed to think that a letter from the coach might serve to justify "letter" status.
