I'm an applicant for the class of 2026 and if I do receive an appointment I want to play competitive sports at the Academy. I'm not D1 material but I know there are supposedly club sports at the Academy. I can't seem to find much info on this online, does anyone know how long the seasons run? Do they get uniforms? Do they play in tournaments?

Yes - there are club sports at USAFA. They vary significantly in terms of activity level, organization, and seasons. In general, if there is an intercollegiate team for the sport, there is rarely a club team for the same activity.

There ARE intramural team sports that do overlap. The season is a few weeks and your squadron has a jersey. This is where you would find the usual suspects of soccer, basketball, flag football, softball.

You can find more info here - scroll to bottom and expand SPORTS

Hi! I'm currently a Doolie at the Academy, and I'm on the competitive judo team. I have LOS, which means that my practices and tournaments take precedence over other training events. It's a really fun team to be on, if you're into martial arts. Tomorrow's also our first tournament of the year! I get to wear civvies to practice, in the form of a gi and rashguard. We also have team gear and competition gis. I think that all LOS sports would have a uniform. We meet three times a week for 1.5 hour practices, so the time commitment is even less than if you didn't have a club sport. Feel free to ask me any questions, about judo or not! (I'm also in a lot of other clubs.) And good luck with your application!

Do you know anyone on the Men’s Club Hockey team?

Kiwi! Good to see you! Which clubs did you sign up for?
I'm in quite a few. I joined the Bulldog Program which prepares Cadets to cross commission into the USMC, which I don't know that I want to do, the Dungeons and Dragons Club, the poetry club, the Airsoft Club (I haven't been able to attend a game yet though), the History Club, and the Judo Club.

Wow that's kind of a bummer. I play volleyball but not at a D1 level. I was hoping there was a Women's club volleyball team at the Academy.

My son played travel volleyball in HS. He went to USAFA and made the Club team doolie year and said it was really good volleyball. COVID struck sophomore year so no games and not much as for practice. He decided not to play his junior year to concentrate on grades and he has a high job priority in his squad which takes a ton of time. He has done intramural volleyball once because he said it’s awful volleyball compared to what he’s used to. Now he picks a couple other intramural sports instead.

how good is intramural relative to club?
Intramurals are mandatory and each squadron MUST field a FULL team for a list of sports. As a result, the quality of play is GENERALLY lower than REC LEAGUE in your town and no where close to the level of play you are accustomed to at the High School varsity or 'club' team. It is common however for the squadron to be smart in their team formation and group players together in an area where they may be most competitive because there are points assigned to intramural sports that go into an overall top unit award.

Depending on your attitude, it can be an issue if you make it one. Each intramural sport will have a season champ. The top team(s) in each sport do have fun and play at an elevated level when compared to those at the bottom of the competitive pool. EVERY non-intercollegiate student (more than half the cadet wing) did something else in High School that they are likely no longer doing, or no longer doing at the same level as they did before they got to USAFA. That could be a sport that USAFA does not offer, high level musicianship, or any other similar activity. For most, that means more time for studies. Emotionally, it is tough initially to no longer be doing what you love and have tied much of your self identity to, but USAFA has a TON of NEW things to be exposed to that will fill the void. You just might find a fit as a new DJ on the radio station KAFA.

One suggestion would be to reach out to the IC COACH and inquire about a manager position. It would keep you apart of the sport and have you around the activity you enjoy. It's not guaranteed, but it's something.

Hold on, I just looked at the recreational clubs section on the website and I saw women’s volleyball listed..? I’m not sure if that’s referring to the intercollegiate team or a different club team :/

To C2026 and beyond, I suggest keeping a wide open mind about all that USAFA has to offer.

Have an idea of what you might be interested in - but keep in mind that selected clubs you have to make the team - not always based on ability, but overall fit. My DD is on a club/sport and had zero experience. She wanted a balance of fun, competition, and athletic workouts plus a sport she'd never tried before, and would likely not get a chance to do outside of USAFA (this last part was very important to her - making the most of an already awesome opportunity). This year 12/50 applicants were accepted; her year was even less due to Covid #s. The other difficulty is you may have to put all your eggs in one basket - and risk being shut out. For tryouts, they were mostly all at the same time.

Hello, I also had a question about sports at USAFA (specifically related to martial arts).
I've been doing Taekwondo for over 8 years and was interested in doing Taekwondo at the Academy. I understand that they used to have a team and the website says that there is a club, but I was wondering if that was true?

Thank you!

@KiwiBird don’t you participate in a club like this? 😊

Can someone put me in contact with the OIC or CIC of the judo club? I was the team captain way back in 91-93; living in Denver now and interested in helping out with coaching. Any pointers on how to get a hold of them would be greatly appreciated.
