I'm thinking about joining the Skydiving and/or Paintballing club. Can anyone give me more information as far as applying to join? How realistic is it for a Freshman to join as well as compete? Is there anyone else thinking about doing either club?

Okay, I can't speak toward the paintball...don't know anything there.

But regarding skydiving. If you mean the academy's team: The Wings of Blue, that's not something you simply "join."

You will first have to be selected for AM490, which is the basic free-fall parachuting program. That would normally be the summer of your second year. IF you do really well there, you might be invited to AM491...that's the "next level" of training.

And it's both pretty select and difficult! We have at least one member on this forum that's "been there, done that, got the nice patch and t-shirt" that can answer FAR better than I.

It's from that course and later that the Wings of Blue team members are selected.

Steve, we also have a skydiving club in addition to the WoB. I have a couple friends in the club that go up to Denver to jump. They really enjoy it (their bank account does not though!)

COOL!

I didn't know that! We didn't have one...."WAAAAY BACK WHEN..."

Those of us crazies just went off on our own.

Blue Skies!

Thanks for the info. I sky dove for my 16th birthday so I sort of got the scary part behind me. I also didn't know that the Skydive club was separate. However, it was the WoB that I was referring to.

I was looking at the Combat Pistol and Paintball clubs. I'm a pretty good shot with a pistol. I think I could do well there.

Skydiving would be fun. I doubt I would be anywhere near good enough for The Wings of Blue, but I would definitely give it a try.

within the first month or so of being here, there's a "club day", where tons of clubs set up info booths in the Arnold Hall ballroom. you can stop by their tables and sign up to be on their distro lists. thats really where you'll get the details you need, to include time commitments and the like. i know some ppl on paintball tho, and they love it

For someone who is interested in the paintball club. Is that a club that you can just join? I know that USAFA as an actual paintball team.
